Aside from recommending you try dhclient, I also suggested you attempt to manually assign a static ip to your eth0 for troubleshooting purposes. You indicated that static assignment failed as well....so I am wondering if you have actually nailed down the issue or if perhaps you improperly configured with static..or if there is some other strangeness afoot.. (?)
Anyway, glad you got it working.
