Archie - Arch Live project

Archie - Arch Live project
set of iso's and scripts using Arch linux for live cd/usb/dvd

this is only a very alfa alfa stage, so no flaming yet... soon...
EDIT: its flaming season... enjoy...

uploaded iso version 0.3 [XFCE], u can get it here
EDIT: links updated

also, archie-scripts are available here : package here, PKGBUILD heresources here
archie-scripts are pvovided for anyone intrested in making his own Arch live cd. next version will add live-usb support.
to install the archie-scripts, add to your /etc/pacman.conf :

[archie]
Server = http://user-contributions.org/projects/archie/packages

and run :

pacman -Sy
pacman -S archie-scripts

then run "mkliveiso" for further information.

currently the scripts supports only squashfs, and require Archies' kernel with unionfs support (this wont be installed on your current Arch installation). also a new "nesting" feature which was added to this version.

more details about the Archie project can be found here

report bugs here

enjoy

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

hi great job. i´m testing it at the moment.

One question. What´s the differences between coreutils and busybox? Are they important?? In my eyes, it would be cool to use busybox on the live-cd and install coreutils when archie will be installed to the HD

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

and thats exactly whats happenning wink

busybox is only used in the initrd (ramdrive) - it wont be installed on the hd on hd-install.

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

Hi z4ziggy,
I think you've done a great work, I was creating an arch live cd with linux live 5, now I'm going to try archie-scripts.

I'd like to ask you a few things:
- why have you started a new project instead working on linux-live 5 script?
- can you tell me what archie-scripts do about hardware detection and configuration? do you try to configure network also?
- the archie kernel have bootsplash support?

thank you for your great work!

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

tnx for the kind words.

i started archie scripts from scratch since at the time of coding linux-live was using kernel 2.4 and not optimal tools (squashfs, unionfs, kernel 2.6, etc). only lately i've been aware of the excellent work Thomas been doing on migrating to 2.6, and also using the above mentioned tools. but that was too late, and i do believe archie provides better performance and is more Arch related.

we do hw detection in Archie using our own tool called lshwd which was coded as a new engine for Arch detection tool - hwd (by Rasat). ideally, lshwd should provide superior detection time (~2 seconds on evg pc).

about bootsplash, yes its been added to 0.3, which hopefully will be released shortly.

more details can be found on Archie forums here.

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

yeah man, your words sounds great to my ears!

I'll surely try archie ASAP and I hope I'll have the possibility to contribute to the project.

Thanks again.

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

Hi everyone, today I've worked a bit on a Archie logo I had in mind.
Actually the Arch is the base for the bridge, where the Pacman and the little ghosts walk on... big_smile
I know the idea is a bit silly, but this is all I could think about by now. wink
C&C are welcome, of course.

P.S. Yes, I've recycled part of my previuos work. wink

Re: Archie - Arch Live project

Arch is based on simplicity. The logo is too complex. Archie is intended to become the live CD of Arch replacing amlug.

Yes, I've realized that it is a bit too confusing, but it was so funny for me that I posted anyway, maybe someone would like it as a background picture. big_smile

BTW, I've talked with z4ziggy, we've got another idea... smile

This is the new idea for the Archie logo, I couldn't think something easier. big_smile

P.S. z4ziggy: Do you still think that an Arch shadow would add something to the logo?

Nice graphics guys. I really like that one iphitus.
Maybe someday I will have a project cool enough for people to make graphics for..

Ehm, the circle is actually a head, and the horizontal bar are just two arms... big_smile

Do you want me to try an Arch + Cd variation?

   / _ | '__/ __| '_ | |/ _
  / ___ | | | (__| | | | | __/

A complete live Arch linux system (v0.7) to be run from a cd/usb, built with the KISS philosophy in mind. No packages has been stripped to provide a full Arch linux system, yet deliver fastest performance with no extensive bloating. Archie uses its own hw-detection tool (lshwd) idealy to support a wide range of hardware with low detection time.

changelog:

0.3.1
+ mkliveiso : fixed bootsplash bug
+ updated repository packages

0.3
+ mkliveiso : added pacman wrapper to hopefully save us from hanging mounts...
+ mkliveiso : added bootsplash support and --splashtheme parameter to allow alternate theme (default=ArchPool)
+ mkliveiso : added --tmp parameter to use /tmp while creating iso
+ mkliveiso : added --nousb parameter to skip usb modules in linuxrc
+ mkliveiso : added --install2arch parameter to install packages into target Arch system

+ linuxrc : fixed nesting disks bug
- linuxrc : removed devfs support (using /sys now)
+ linuxrc : added nestsearch=yes/no cheatcode to disable nest-search
+ linuxrc : added boot=cdrom/usb/scsi cheatcode to force boot type
+ linuxrc : unified with Arch messages format
+ linuxrc : renamed nesting cheatcodes from homepart/rootpart to homenest/rootnest
+ inittab : default to 5 (now u can change it when on rootnest) instead of boot cmdline

It's heavily inspired on iphitus work, I hope he doesn't mind. wink
