Hi guys.
Im a brand new arch linux user. so bare with me...
I have just installed arch as per the beginners guide i found and printed on this site.
everything went as it should. until it came to the point of typing 'startx'
it tries to start... but all i see is a black screen with a white cursor in the center. and i need to reboot to get out of it.
the only thing i noticed that might be causing it is that during startup, HAL fails to start. it actually says FAIL.
other than that, ive got no ideas. im so close to being in the graphical arch, yet so far.
Im using the nvidia nv divers. and my xorg.conf looks all fine.
any help would be much appreciated.
any further info i can give to assist is easy and quick to provide.
thanks in advance.

What does your .xinitrc look like?

Yes, it is caused by hal not starting. But why would it fail to start? Have you looked in the logs?

You can try to start hal manually (as root):
/etc/rc.d/hal start
and let us know what you get.
Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.
