I wish, this would be true. The power management in the open source drivers is bad.

There is no official power management. There are some patches for the kernel, that's all.
I hope 2.6.34 brings this feature.

Well, now I don't find it refreshing.

Yeah thx i have it.
I have two displays, if i put one of them with "xrandr --output DFP3 --off" off. The display turns off but the blacklight goes not in Standby.
Have someone the same problem?
I have a 5770.
If I see it right in the AUR. I can't update my xsever to 1.7?

Right. Current Catalyst doesn't support xorg-server 1.7. Welcome to the club...

Edit: Garbage: Just a few personal thoughts about catalyst 10.1...
umm... out now Ubuntu 9.10 is putted to "production support", i have just readed http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21739 and according to that - some silly, but very important symlink to libatiuki.so.1.0 is missed - so new (out of the box) catalyst wont work with Ubuntu 9.10 at all . Wheres support in that? It looks like testing and providing working driver for just few supported distros is for amd/ati too hard work! So maybe they should provide beta release so ppl can test it? i can see catalyst-linux mailing list:
betatester: On my U 9.10 new catalyst-beta is not working...
amd: Rly? Its working for us... Can you attach some log?
betatester: It's saying theres no libatiuki.so.1
amd: Hmm... umm... no, umm... It's working for us.
betatester2: Dhou! Just make a symlink!
amd: OOOoouuu...
I guess theres no beta tests cuz they are afraid of such situation ;)P.
Nah, thats just stupid kidding. Heh... Xorg-server 1.8 is almost out . And Im not gonna say any more in this sensitive subject. Anyway the case of last ubuntu shows that support doesn't need to be putted on time even for supported distro, and even if it is putted - it could be done badly.
Edit: "Production support" is "Production" only cuz it don't have symlink? If there will be symlink will it be called "support"?
> /dev/null
BTW I haven't done symlink to libatiuki.so.1.0 in catalyst AUR build. It's working good without it, and i don't know why U 9.10 is calling fo it.
libatiuki.so.1.0 is new file and it hasn't been included in previous catalyst build, that's all.
Edit: Althought i think i will make such symlink in next catalyst release so it may look more clearly.

For those using the mobile HD3650 and who had to use
aticonfig --acpi-services=off
to make their X work with fglrx:
I now turned it back on using
aticonfig --acpi-services=on
X still starts, i noticed glxgears went down from 5000 fps to 2000 fps, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! Doom 3 still runs perfect on highest settings. I have yet to see if it had any positive effect on the battery, but I'm hopeful.

Thanks for the quick PKGBUILD !
Has anyone tested XvBA on this new driver ? Specifically on an Evergreen card ?

so new (out of the box) catalyst wont work with Ubuntu 9.10 at all .
I'm running Ubuntu (Kubuntu) 9.10 and the Catalyst 10.1 driver works for me. I cannot build the packages, but the installer works.

Yep, that's my understanding of how it is too.

I just had another look on the phoronix forum, & quite early on people are failing to be able to install with --buildpkg, but it looks like it works if the installer does its thing, I agree it's not always easy getting to the bottom of things reading a forum.
Did someone succeed to install it on Karmic?
I run:
sh ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/karmic
And then after a lot of warnings it fails because of not finding libatiuki.so.1, see bellow. It was also downloading and installing some packages after the execution.
& then this:
LOL, the one new feature mentioned in the release notes is Ubuntu 9.10 support. Seems that they didn't even manage to get that right. Anyway it installed fine here. I just chose to let the installer do the installation and not build a package.

I recently purchased an ATi Mob. HD5650. It works okay with the 10.1 AUR package. Thanks Vi0L0 for creating it so soon!
What I run into is that if I have Composite enabled (AIGLX too) and try to run Penumbra game it gets heavily corrupted, sometimes black screen only or flickering (textures flickering, disappearing, or shaders making viewport black. Seems like transparency doesnt work or something).
It's 32bit binary game, so using AMD64 arch I have all the lib32 installed with lib32-catalyst-utils (i have updated the AUR file to use the 10.1 package too).
If I disable Composite explicitly the game is running fine on highest settings/shaders...
Any tricks and tips what to do? Settings for the driver in xorg.conf to make this go away?

Well im back to open source driver (with 2.6.33 it's working very fast) - so i cannot test it, but maybe this could help to test/reach no-tearing:
- try to enable (always on) v-sync on amdcccle
- try to add
Option "TexturedVideoSync" "on"
to Section "Device" of xorg.conf

Is your opengl redirect working well? Try for example to run glxgears when composite is on. Is it acting strange - flickering/lagging?
Edit: I understand that you are running Penumbra on fullscreen? Hmm... can you run any other opengl game wroten directly for linux x86_64 - like nexuiz or something?

I suspect redirecting is the culprit somehow. I will try force Indirect. You think it might help?
Yes, running Penumbra full screen.
Okay, i will try some other games. Warzone2100 worked okay, but i will try something heavier like nexuiz and report back. Also i will try to mess with redirecting. I couldnt spot flicker/lag with glxgears or fgl_glxgears, tho it was certainly slower when compiz was on (in both cases Composite was on, but compiz off meant glxgears was faster.).
Thanks for the tip!

this mean that opengl redirect is ratcher working.

It's always slower when composite is on, its normal, don't bother yourself with it.
Hmm... It's hard to tell what's wrong exactly. Maybe it's only Penumbra particular case. Or maybe something with lib32... Anybody else noticed something?

Just an idea for those who want to test it: http://www.penumbragame.com/demo.php
You can download the free demo here. Needs lib32, lib32-catalyst-utils.
I will report back later with my experiment if I got home.

Sorry. Tested again with a clear new session, checking redirection is not overconfigured, and with clean X! It works flawlessly now - all native linux games run fine so far. Sorry for bothering.

Oh, screw it. It's related to Suspend-Resume. Upon doing so things got spoiled again...Still testing what can I do against it...
After Resume, glxgears is flickering.
---
EDIT: Full power OFF / ON fixes the thing.
Any ideas how to do it without that? Some tool that wipes out things upon GDM restart?
==
EDIT2: It only happens if Compiz is enabled while suspending. So if I switch it off for suspending i got a temporary solution. Any better solution?
==
EDIT3:
Interestingly, if I start a fresh terminal and do 'su - username' the flickering is not present in the applications started from the given terminal.
After trying different settings and restarts and stuff, I concluded that this could be just as much a compiz problem as an fglrx related thing. Starting with a fresh terminal it works great, so I have my workaround. The compiz desktop seems to work okay after resume regardless of the other problems. I'm suspecting it's related to something like a vsync setting because when I have this trouble with flickering glxgears it writes that it's going to use vsync. When I start a new terminal and do a 'su - user' it does not output the vsync related message to the console when running glxgears.
I will try to dig up some info how libGL vsync can be switched...
glxgears output when flickering
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

Well It looks like I'll be a nVidia guy now. I just ordered an Alienware M15x with the i7-720QM and Nvidia card.
It also looks like I'll be saying goodbye to Linux for now too. As far as I can tell Linux sucks for the new Nahalem i7 CPU's. Like Gentoo is reporting that you can only compile for Core2 and No turbo support until 2.6.33. I can't find anything telling me Linux dev's are working to optimize for the Nahalem chip.
I think I am moving to OpenSolaris. Intel supposedly has been working with the OpenSolaris guys to get the Chip optimized for Solaris and Solaris optimized for the new Chip. We'll see how it goes though.
