I am currently running Openbox standalone and would like to replace my tint with a dock. From what I've read only wbar, cairo, awn, and gnome-do seem to be any good.
But which would should I use?
Gnome-do seems like the best choice, but it seems dependent on gnome and it requires too many dependencies that I'm not even sure I'm going to even use...
As for the rest which one has the most functional, stable, and fastest? Do all of them have system trays?
Any suggestions or comments appreciated.

Try them all and see which you like.
I never really liked gnome-do much because its mono (I think) but cairo-dock is pretty sexy (if you like that kind of thing).

gnome-do doesn't have tray or task support AFAIK, and my issue with cairo and awn was, that they need a compositing manager (e.g. Compiz) to be installed to work properly / at all ... so wbar would be the weapon of choice, looking at the specs, but I did't try it, yet.
wbar seems to have tray and tasks support, as hinted in this article: http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/wbar (crunchbanglinux.org always being a valuable resource for opebox users, btw)

cairo-dock is pretty

wbar is the lightest, and works without compositing, but it's only a pretty launcher. No tasklist or system tray though, when I used it.

If you want compositing but not Compiz, you could always try xcompmgr.

Thanks for all the replies.
Tried cairo. System tray didn't function and i couldn't get the background to be transparent. Huge black box aroud the dock.
AWN was buggy with xcompmgr.
wbar was alright, but there was no system tray. and I couldn't get wbar to appear above windows. some occasional glitches and not many features i was hoping for.
I guess i'll stick with a panel for now.

For a dock, wbar is good
For a panel, I would say use xcompmgr and Bmpanel w/arch theme.

i use cairo dock WITHOUT compositing! works perfectly, after its installed, it tells u how to get rid of the black boxes on a tooltip!
i have my cairo at the top and tint2 at the bottom. have tried a few others, but never satisfied. wbar just got on my nerves for some strange reason. Best bet is just give each one a go, n see what fits ur setup

Just FYI: AWN 0.4 no longer needs a composite manager

configure cairo-dock, in the systems tab there's an option for emulating fake transparency. This would remove the black background when used without compositing.
