Well, I live in Toronto, so its not much of a hassle for me to go. But I'm yet another poor student, $100 might be a bit too much. (My friend asked me to go to another con—Anime North I think, and I declined on the grounds I had no money, and it was half the price of this.) Are any of the charges for the hotel etc? If I live here can you cut those?

EDIT: Alright, I will be interested in any volunteer work-for-discount or non-conference activities after. (I don't think this really warrants a post, so I'm putting it here.)

No, the charges are for renting the classrooms, a lunch for attendees, and a bit of schwagish stuff -- conference badges, maybe a t-shirt or bag. Accommodations are extra already.

One thing I can do for sure is get in touch with you if we're doing any non-conference social stuff (dinner after the conference, touring the city, etc) and you can come join us then. Bug me closer to the date and I'll make sure to do this.

It'd be cooler if you could attend the actual conference though. If I thought we were going to have an excess of money, I'd consider offering discounts for volunteer work (man the registration desk, set up tables, help distribute food, that kind of thing), but at the moment, I think things are going to be pretty tight.  If it looks like we can afford this, I'll let you know.

On a related note, if anyone can come up with companies willing to sponsor us for a few hundred dollars, it will really help us meet budget and make the overall experience more awesome, and allow a few more broke students in, if they'll do some grunt work.

I talked to Judd today, he definitely wants to make it, but it may depend on his family's plans for the summer. I haven't talked to Aaron.

I don't think we'll have the technical resources or manpower to stream the conference. I'm hoping to tape at least some of the discussion, but the whole A/V thing has me spooked.

I'd like to be there, but it depends on some "family" factors.  Also, as i'm french from north of Montreal, QC, i get easily lost and become shy when it's time to speak in English....

I have some contacts in the multimedia department and in Journalism so I'll take a look into this one. May be we can get their help and we can stream ... I'll post back later with accurate information for yea or nay and what our part would be if it can be done.

I'm a starving college student and it would be a ~4.5 hour drive for me, but I'm trying to work out a way to come! If any type of work-for-discount type thing ends up being possible, I'm your man.

I saw the "ArchCon 2010 Organizing in full swing" post on the blog it says you are asking for helpers, and I figure now is the "closer to the date" time that I should buy you again about these stuff. So, is there anything I could do?

I should note that I have a class from 6-9PM on the 22nd, though I guess I should be able to skip it or something if there's no test that day and I'm doing well in the class.

Thanks for the reminder. I did some quick thinking, and at this point, we're paying for the classrooms regardless, so the more people we have the merrier. If you can cover $20-$25 for a "student fee" (this way we don't lose money on schwag and meals), and can be available at the conference to do whatever you're told ("find the caterer, man the registration desk, track down the person who is supposed to be presenting right now, go get Ricardo, go get Dusty, record that presentation (extra points if you have equipment!!), etc), I think that would be ok. This'll be on a first-come first serve basis; we don't need a lot of volunteers, so e-mail me if you want to take advantage of this (dusty@archlinux.ca).

Hi Archers,

I've seen that there will also be some Bug Squashing going on during the conference. Can I participate online from home (UTC+1)?

This would be my first Arch Linux Bug Squashing, but I hope that you will find something trivial for me to do :-) I can edit simple PKGBUILDs and I'm willing to learn, Maybe someone could take me by the hand ...

Huber: Indeed, we are planning on running the bug squashing session concurrently with an online bug squashing. My plan is to put the IRC channel on a big screen so that people at ArchCon can see what the rest of the world has to say. I am also hoping to have a video feed of the room so that people around the world can see what's going on at ArchCon, but nobody's stepped up to do anything like that, and I don't think I have the tech to do it (unless it's possible to stream video from an android phone?)
