X does not start after todays update [Solved]

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

Have you tried downgrading the 64bit nvidia driver first?

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

What do you have in your .xinitrc that is being launched when X starts?

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

I would also like to ask, do you have the hal daemon running? In this case you mentioned that X didn't start even without a xorg.conf file. If you don't that would be it.

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

did you had errors in pacman's output about missing so names? i'm asking because gtk2 was installed before librsvg and libwmf. reinstall gtk2(to regerenate /etc/gtk correctly) and fire up xorg.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

When you try starting your WM/DE, what does the .xsession-errors file in your ~ , report ?

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

Finally I get it working by installing the beta version of nvidia driver in AUR... I really cannot understand how the update can be done without making core and extra fully consistent...

I want to add my user input here. I currently use nvidia on i686 with all the packages updated with libjpeg/libpng but the nvidia driver still loads X for me. What could be the problem for x86_64?

What do you have in your .xinitrc that is being launched when X starts?

its empty - I run kdm3 as a daemon.

I did not try to downgrade the nvidia driver - as to my understanding it was not upgraded today

And yes - Hal is running - and X starts the twm thing when running startx logged in as root

Also there is nothing in .xsession-errors when I run startx

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

well - now I have upgraded to nvidia beta - and I can start a fluxbox session.
Starting kdesession (kdemod3) gives some libpng12.so.0 errors

Re: X does not start after todays update [Solved]

And after installing libpng12 from aur I am running again - thanks for all inputs'
Edit: and also with the current nvidia, but there is an error with the down arrow, which now simultaneously executes the Enter key hmm

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I don't know if this will help anyone at all, but I have just had exactly the same problem and fixed it by removing the

export PATH=.

at the end of my .bashrc.  I'm not sure what in the latest upgrade decided to do this for me, but I am eternally ungrateful wink

Yeah - I feel very clever now to not have thought about that for so long big_smile

Maybe because a slight streak of panic enters the picture when I'm beaten back to a raw shell.
