Is there any particular reason Qt and hasn't been updated? [answered]

As the subject suggests, I'm curious as to why the latest Qt (and Qt Creator) hasn't been made available via pacman. Both have had newer versions out for a while and have also been flagged as out of date in pacman for probably the same amount of time.

Forgive my ignorance, I only recently came back to arch from using a source based distribution, so perhaps there's some logistical reason? Do all dependent packages need to be re-compiled for the newer version of this package? For example, to provide the latest Qt, would you want/need to re-compile all of the kde packages that depend on it? From my understanding, this is not a requirement (you can update gtk and qt without requiring a recompile of all dependent packages, so long as the API hasn't drastically changed and functionality hasn't been removed).

So... what gives? smile

[edit]
I should add that I just did an update today and there's a minor Qt update, along with a bunch of KDE packages. Why no major Qt update?

For the time being, I've downloaded the full SDK and installed it locally, in my home directory. But still, I'm hoping arch will provide the latest updates. Although I don't miss compile times, the great thing about the previous distro (and it's package manager) was that new releases were made available pretty quickly.

I think they're waiting for KDE 4.4.

Looks like qt is orphaned, meaning it has no maintainer so it won't receive any updates until someone takes over.

Not quite true. Pierre is the maintainer for qt x86_64. Usually the other arch will be maintained by the same person even if it does say that its orphaned.

I'm running x86_64 and I'm guessing there's a maintainer because I updated just today (I update regularly). In fact, a whole bunch of KDE packages were updated too.

But that doesn't explain why Qt isn't updated to the latest stable version after such a long time. There should be no need to wait for KDE 4.4 to update Qt... GTK updates are released, regardless of the status of Gnome. Who do we pester to get the latest version of Qt into pacman? big_smile

Don't trust the maintainer ifnormation on our website; it's just broken. As for Qt 4.6: We need to wait for KDE 4.4 (read next week) as KDE 4.3 has some problems with it.

Anyway, all this has discussed many times before.

I was going to add I think they were waiting for KDE4.4, but didn't want to give bad info.  And thanks for the maintainer tip, I don't use it often and I guess now I'll just hop in IRC if I really want to know the status.

Ok, that's a fair point. I did attempt to search (admittedly, not very thoroughly), but the forum search doesn't allow you to search for just "Qt" related topics. I just did a quick search using google (site:bbs.archlinux.org qt 4.6) and the answer came up immediately. My bad! Thanks for the patient response!
