I am on KDE4. While DVDs are automounted, I cannot mount cdroms. On manually mounting, I get segmentation error. Any tips?
[root@arch_devb devadittya]# mount /dev/cdrom /media/cd/
Segmentation fault

have you tried mounting a cdrom via /dev/dvd? that always worked for me....
urxvtc / wmii / zsh / configs / onebluecat.net

I always use /dev/sr0

i have tried /dev/sr0, and that seems to give me the same error. I'll try /dev/dvd.
I have this question though, shouldn't HAL automount CDs as well? It only seems to automount DVDs.

When inserting a CD, try seeing what device file it is by seeing the latest output from: dmesg
Offline
The dmesg output suggests that it is sr0, but I am still getting segmentation fault. Dmesg has a bunch of other errors as well:
Here is the dmesg output:

have you tried making an image and mounting that instead?
# dd if=/dev/sr0 of=WC3.iso
# mkdir /mnt/WC3/
# mount -o loop /path/to/WC3.iso /mnt/WC3/
or whatever folder you prefer instead of /mnt/WC3/
EDIT: Oh, kind of lost track here. Of course this is not a real solution if it's not only about one certain CD.
Got confused because you only named one. But you already have tried others, right?

I have tried a number of CDs. It has no problems with DVDs of any kind, DVDs get automounted actually. CDs on the other hand, just refuse to mount.
Offline
you should try mounting with the filesystem type given.
I found this thread in spanish which states that libblkid is used to recognize the filesystem. [EDIT: I mean type of disk, at least I think thats what it means]
That person is having trouble with cd/dvd mounting in general but maybe it can help you. There is a patch for hal in the last reply.
Don't know if it is a good idea but maybe it brings you further

I am having problems with a few CDs. I can't fix it though. I'll use the .iso method for now. Thanks a lot guys.

Now, I tried dd for the Frozen Throne CD, and I get this message:

Now, I tried dd for the Frozen Throne CD, and I get this message:
# dd if=/dev/sr0 of=TFT.iso dd: opening `TFT.iso': Read-only file system
and exactly _where_ were you standing (pwd) when you issued that command?
Offline
instead of 'of=TFT.iso' do 'of=/home/[youruser]/TFT.iso' or a directory like that where you know you have write access.

Got around it. The previous ISO was still mounted while I was trying to create a new ISO. That is what created the problem. Unmounted that, and everything works fine. Thanks a lot guys, and sorry for the trouble.
