I've been happily playing Quake Live with Arch Linux for the last few months.
However an update a few days ago, around the 1/2/2010 has made Quake Live unplayable. I am not sure what is the cause of the bug. Or how to roll back and perhaps find the bug myself.
Has anyone seen corruption like this?

I would guess that the Quake Live plugin doesn't use the latest packages.

I don't understand. Why can't you just update the library. Why does everything need a rebuild? The interface has changed? If so, that's insane surely?

I guess this proprietary plugin should have been statically built in the first place.

API and ABI. They change from major version to major version (even minor version depending on what library specifically).

Thanks, there is also a hint to make a workaround, i'll summarize it here:
in last update on Arch we have new version of libpng. The QL plugin was builded under libpng v. 1.2, but now we have libpng v. 1.4
Next is fat0troll's fix:
find in aur libpng12 and install it
e.g.
yaourt -S libpng12
now firefox has to be run with this string:
LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libpng12.so" /usr/bin/firefox
Quake live should work now
fat0troll changed his ff completely by doing this:
mv /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/ff
and writing a small script instead
#!/bin/bash
LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libpng12.so" /usr/bin/ff $*

Same happens to me. I'll try the workaround.

not working for me. I built libpng12 from aur and used alias quakelive='LD_PRELOAD=/usr/bin/libpng12.so blah blah' but ff just ignores it because libpng12.so isn't in my /usr/bin. Just the newer one.
ideas? I've been away from Arch for a long time now, so I may just be doing something stupid I've forgotten about.
[hush@mothership libpng12]$ ls /usr/bin/ | grep libpng
libpng14-config
libpng-config
