Hi folks. I stupidly ran pacman -Syu on my desktop, knowing that it was a big update with the png/jpeg thing and I didn't free up space on my rather small root partition first. I don't have a separate /var partition. It seems there was just enough space to cache all the packages and then it ran out during the upgrade/install stage.
Here is the end of /var/log/pacman.log

[2010-02-07 12:33] upgraded yelp (2.28.1-1 -> 2.28.1-2)Errors aren't logged it seems but there were some errors from ldconfig. Running ldconfig now I get this
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libxmlrpc_server++.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libxmlrpc.so.3 is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libxmlrpc_server++.so.6.21 is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libxmlrpc.so.3.21 is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libxmlrpc.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libxmlrpc_server++.so.6 is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start. And now for the really bad stuff. Running "pacman <anything>" segfaults as does yaourt. Also, X won't start.
Lots of stuff still works. I can browse with links, ssh in and out, read man pages, etc. I think if I can just get pacman working again I should be able fix whatever else is broken by reinstalling some packages. I manually downloaded some packages (pacman and its immediate dependencies - libarchive and libfetch) and extracted them with "tar --backup -xzvf some.pkg.tar.gz" from / but that hasn't helped. If some Arch guru could tell me how to recover from this without doing a full reinstall I'd be very grateful.

What does "ldd -r /usr/bin/pacman" say? Any errors?

Oh, not good when ldd seg faults. Your list of libs is almost complete, just missing libpthread.so. But some of the other programs you listed as working also link against libpthread.so, so I doubt that's it.
You may be able to restore some old packages from pacman's cache. Clear some space by deleting downloaded upgrade tar's, or moving them to a bigger partition.
