Last weekend I updated my system using "pacman -Syu" and it downloaded over 300MB (900+MB installed files).
everything is great, and better than before, except wine.
Whenever I try to start a wine app, even the "winecfg" tool, it kills the running X server and sometimes leaves me in the console.
I tried in this order:
reinstalling wine -> nothing
removing wine, "rm -rf ~/.wine", downloading and installing wine package -> nothing
downgrading to januarys wine "wine-1.1.37-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz" with "pacman -U" -> nothing
installing libjpeg-7 from AUR -> nothing
installing libpng12 from AUR -> nothing
I need my wine running again desperatly: ![]()
No tv and no wine, makes elsantodelaespada go crazy! ![]()
PS: I'm in the dark here.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Still not working, I'm forcing reinstallation of all libs.
-desperate times-

resynced all libs, removed and reinstalled wine from an up to date mirror
Server = ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
Server = http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
and I still get the same problem, I installed winamp, but now it restarts X when I try to run it.
also recompiled custom kernel 2.6.32.7 in my hp mini 110-1020 netbook. solved nothing.
to use the stock kernel does not solves this neither.

i'll try to gather some logfiles next time it happens. right now i'm using my X server so it'll have to wait..

finally came across with a solution, an ugly one
seem to me the problem is the xfce4 desktop environment. maybe it is not entirely recompiled to the new libpng or libjpeg packages.
temporally I switched to LXDE.
Everything works just fine now. although I'll miss my xfce desktop, I've been expecting the chance to use LXDE more intensively.
I'll mark this as solved and await a couple of weeks for my next system update.
