[Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

Hi all,

I juste did a full upgrade this morning, and soon after (it strangely didn't happen after the first reboot, but when I logged out of my perfectly working session, after having booted my upgraded system) I'm stuck at 1024x768.  The problem starts directly after boot, and my display is telling me "Input not supported", so I guess my card is trying to set some exotic resolution and the display sticks to 1024x768.

I tried downgrading the kernel (and kernel26-firmware and kernel26-headers) to the previous version (it seemed the most obvious source of problem, considering the fact that the problem rises just after Grub), it did no good.  I also tried downgrading xorg-server, still no good.

I tried specifying correct resolutions in xorg.conf (don't usually have one at all), the weren't available after X started.

I must say I'm quite out of ideas, so if someone can help me look in the good direction I'm all listening!

Thanks in advance

Re: [Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

the KMS stuff should only affect the console fb,so xorg should not matter,if this is your issue and its setting the resolution wrong, it is because it is not getting a correct EDID from your screen.

my external display has this issue, its broken, if downgrading your kernel does not fix it, you might be experiencing the same issue.

i fixed it by issuing a kernel command through grub: video=VGA-1:1680x1050

edit to your needs wink

EDIT

if the EDID is wrong, xorg with have this issue too, you will have to add some monitor stuff to xorg so that it can detect the size correctly

Re: [Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

Ok thanks for the hint

It defintely is a EDID problem, I get this in dmesg :

*ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 243

I just d'ont understand which package could mess with that other than the kernel...

I'll look for a corresponding bug, if it's still unreported I'll file it this evening.

Anyone knows a way to circumvent the problem (in X, I don't work that much in console...) while it isn't solved?

EDIT : ok, just understood what eldragon meant by "Monitor stuff", trying that

Re: [Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

(WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa

looks strange to me - as if xorg-server is using the vesa driver. That would explain why you only get a 1024x768 resolution. Could you check in your Xorg log file? It *should* say something like

(II) LoadModule: "intel"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 1.7.1, module version = 2.9.1
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 6.0

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

I have these lines, just followed by "LoadModule : "vesa" "...

Re: [Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

I just tried with a old Xorg.conf file that used to work with this display, but with a different graphics card.  I just changed the driver to "intel" and I got a black screen with my display still complaining about "Input resolution not supported" (he is a plaintive one, I know....), the default resolution in the file being 1440*900 (native screen resolution).

Re: [Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

its most likely your screen the issue. test it under windows, on another machine.. you wont get past 1024x768 if its the same issue.

if im not mistaken, the edid is sent through the green channel (VGA), my screen has some dancing green pixels that appeared when the EDID stopped working. too lazy to find a new vga cable and test if its just the cable.

EDIT
here is my piece of xorg.conf relevant to the screen

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Samsung"
    # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
    Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync
EndSection

use your own modeline. the wiki has the relevant info on how to create a new xorg.conf file for your hardware...

Re: [Intel KMS] Wrong resolution after upgrade [SOLVED - WEIRD]

I don't think so, both were properly locked with the screws (it just sounds weird to say they were well screwed)

I'll try to switch them again before leaving for the sake of scientific curiosity...
