Intel GMA X4500 (G41)

Hi peoples!
I've just bought a new computer and there is video on MB : intel GMA x4500 and chipset is G41.
Installed arch, updated everything..then i get kernel crash after reboot! (some drm module and that because of KMS maybe?)

is it possible to make it work ;.) ?

I have the same thing and it's working fine with KMS and latest updates.

Maybe you can confirm that bug.
The only way I found is to do my video memory 128MB in BIOS  and option PAVP(Protect Audio Video Path) disable, in GRUB add this options i915.modeset=1 enable_mtrr_cleanup and everything OK.

What is output from command
dmesg | grep drm

What is your Motherboard?

PAVP: disable
DVMT: maximum DVMT

This work for me!

works for me too. otherwise when i choose Share memory: 256 Mb i get kernel panic when intel drm module tries to load!
also put "i915.powersave=0" into the GRUB's menu.lst kernel line and it gave me a little FPS boost in 3D...  xD

Also i want to say there's something wrong maybe with intel-DVMT memory mapping by kernel, because when i play 3D games, after some time i see 99 % CPU load by Udev process and 2 times slower fps in games. that is no good i think...

So 99% cpu load by Udev process stays for some time even after i exit 3D game...


just don't know what to do.

Maybe someone(programmer) write a correct driver for our hardware hmm

I try compile  several times(7-8) kernel 2.6.33-rc6 (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31932) with different changes in this files:
~/src/linux-2.6.33/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_dma.c
~/src/linux-2.6.33/drivers/char/agp/intel-agp.c

but I'm not a programmer and don't understand much(nothing:)) only try some my idea and don't have success for now!

I think there's still buggy video memory management (which is DVMT?) by kernel...so we need proper intel drm kernel module in order not to have cpu 100% used by Udev and slowed everything down

I don't see any logic in that:
drivers work with Share memory = 128 MB in BIOS and don't work with Share memory = 256 MB???
What you think is there some logic explanation of that?
I write to ASRock support month ago, but no replay from them!

maybe because of that type of memory allocation? i think

for example when you have 1 gig of mem you are able only for 128 mb of vram
when 2 gigs - 256 mb
4 gigs of ram and you are able to use 1700 mb of vram!

sau something if you guess i'm not right


i have only 1 gig of Ram so only 128 megs of vram is to access.
so how many do you have??

I have 4GB RAM(Dual DDR).
I try remove one of my memory plate and with 2GB RAM bug is still here.
I don't have more idea...:(
I'm almost sure that problem is in driver not in BIOS, but I don't know what to do. As I mention I try compile kernel several times with different changes in some files whit no success...

I hate to say it, but this is true in Win7 64 bit.!!!

But I like Linux and I will keep trying...

Nothing happened  with this adjustment - can't boot.
Work for my only with Share memory = 128MB.

Are you on x86 or x86_64?  If x86, as it seems to be somehow memory-related error, you could try booting with less than 1GB of ram (problem with memory extension have been a reported, but should be corrected by now).  Append "mem=900M" to your kernel line in grub.  I really don't think it will solve your problem (it's not a solution anyway), but that could help narrowing down the options...
