why do i need virtuoso (soprano dependency):
A scalable cross-platform server that combines SQL/RDF/XML Data Management with Web Application Server and Web Services Platform functionality
on the laptop that is used as a basic tool with kde DE?
virtuoso is a new soprano dependency which in turn is required by a lot of kde related stuff

Yeah, and it's pretty hard on my CPU.

Probably because of http://nepomuk.kde.org/

I wonder if there is a way to stop this madness? Recently I see more and more packages with added new dependencies that provide 0 (zero) usability for a user.
Offline
You can disable it in systemsettings.
Offline
so why virtuoso is added as dependency if it is not needed? Why not make it optional?
Offline
its not optional. (ask the KDE devs wha) E.g. if you disable it you cannot use any PIM apps.
Offline
I don't use PIM apps,
kdepimlibs worked up until now fine without virtuoso, I doubt that basic functionality changed. I am not blaming you (maintainer).
KDE4 supposed to be faster than KDE3, it is not (requires more RAM even without composite enabled) more CPU power.
KDE4 is more difficult to configure (should be easier) than kde3 (e.g. no way to shutdown nepomuk server which is running even though nepomuk is disabled in systemsettings, no way to disable Documents list in KDE menu even though this is obvious security issue - I did filed bug with KDE but developer had/still has problems why this is security issue). The list of issues with KDE4 is much longer, in short this is exactly the same problem as with CFS scheduler that added more and more code becaming less and less usable/slower/more hardware demanding.

Worked for me. Took a while, granted, but top shows no signs of it anymore.

top without filtering swich will not show all runing processes. Or rather it will but unless you have huge screen to show all more than hundred (kde) processes on single screen nepomuk process will be "hiden" below screen.
So use top + filter
top -U username
or
ps with filter
ps -u username
or variation of the above:
ps -U root -u root -N
or
system activity monitor
I have disabled nepomuk server in system settings (and all inexing stuff) but crap was still running, so l had to add script to kde Autostart to kill nepomuk completely.
Obviously this is bug (without nepomuk running KDE is just fine), but kde devs resuse to admit this (as in the case of last used documets list).
KDE seems to seriously suffer from schizophrenia:
it is trying to please kids with all moving parts (quite useless), tha one can't completely get rid of
and it is trying hard to get enterprise (ridiculous), there are much better OSS apps
end effect is ridiculous:
one may need one db4, one mysql, one obligatory virtuoso with nepomuk and maybe few other databases? There is no way that someone may think that this is normal.
Imagine all this crap running!
promised land of better kde4 than kde3 is with each kde4 incarnation further away.

The good point of all this is that you can disable almost all this useless-for-you services, and KDE will work at least as Gnome does, for example. So, if you have a modern machine, you are supposed to be capable of running all this "crap" without problems and get a pretty good use of it, if you don't, disable it. As easy as it sounds. (Disabling nepomuk works to me).
In the other hand nepomuk is obviously not working properly, I have a laptop with 4GB of RAM and a Core2Duo and it nearly chokes it, and as I could read, I'm not the only one. If it couldn't run on nearly all normal computers it must be disabled by default and be a dependency of the least number possible of KDE apps, IMHO. Perhaps it's just a big bad bug?
btw I think that the uselessness of services like akonadi or plasma is more than debatable. OSS must evolve too, and that's a good path to follow, but it's just an opinion.
