Wireless configuration

The wireless network consistently fails to get a connection when set through rc.conf.  I am very confused by the rare occasion when using rc.conf works.  I have tried netcfg, wicd, and setting the wireless connection in /etc/conf.d/wireless.  None connect on boot with netcfg/wireless sometimes working afterwards.  Wicd just always fails.

Setting the connection manually with iwconfig, ifconfig, and either dhclient or dhcpcd usually works.

EDIT:Perhaps I was hasty about wicd.  After reboot wicd connected.  I thought that all the services required had been started but I must have been incorrect.
