Kernel 2.6.32-ARCH slows down and syslog-ng goes crazy *

Hi, it's a month now that randomly my computer slows down.
I took a look with "iotop" and found that syslog-ng was going crazy writing continuosly to the logfile.
taking a look at these files i found this message that gets written over and over again:

ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction
ACPI Exception: AE_TIME, Returned by Handler for [EmbeddedControl] (20090903/evregion-424)
ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.AMW0.WMCA] (Node ffff8800bf4182c0), AE_TIME

here is my computer info

2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Any ideas on what's causing this error??

Re: Kernel 2.6.32-ARCH slows down and syslog-ng goes crazy *

I have the same problem, and I had to revert to 2.6.31 as the computer hangs after BIOS POST when I see those errors.

Here's the relevant kernel bug report: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14733

It seems to be pretty random and not many users are experiencing it, so please report on Bugzilla as this is critical (as in "my computer doesn't boot up" yikes ) for many users.

For reference, this is the link to the latest x86_64 working kernel:

http://arm.konnichi.com/core/os/x86_64/ … pkg.tar.gz

And nvidia drivers for that kernel:

http://arm.konnichi.com/2009/12/15/extr … pkg.tar.gz
http://arm.konnichi.com/2009/12/15/extr … pkg.tar.gz

Here's a post on the Italian Archlinux community forum: http://www.archlinux.it/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7359

Re: Kernel 2.6.32-ARCH slows down and syslog-ng goes crazy *

I'm still on kernel 2.6.31because all later kernels flood my syslog.
Any way someone is going to fix this? It's quite annoying not being able to upgrade my graphics drivers ( they depend on kernel )

Re: Kernel 2.6.32-ARCH slows down and syslog-ng goes crazy *

Bumping the thread because due to Xorg upgrade and different way of handling it's config files, I've been forced to use latest nvidia drivers along with the latest kernel. This brought up the same exact problem i had with kernel 2.6.31 and now i have latest kernel and nvidia drivers but i had to turn off acpi that doesn't let me suspend to ram anymore and i don't know the level of my battery power now.
Don't you all think that therre is something terribly wrong to all this?
I've googled around a bit and found some bugtrackers posting different patches and wanted to know if arch will adopt one of them. It's not possible to have the same bug for 4 different kernel versions...

First you will need to find out which of those patches actually work, have you tried them?

No, not yet. I'm kind of a mess with touching the kernel.
But if you think that once i find a working one it will be put into arch's kernel, then i'll start testing

Once you have a working patch at least the primary problem is solved, you can then use your laptop normally again and know how to fix it when it happens again.

There is no guarantee that the Arch devs will include a patch, they will primarily stimulate to have it included with the kernel sources upstream. So you should definitely keep an eye on the bugzilla report and tell your findings there, in the end an official kernel patch is the way to go.

This patch is the way to go: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=25261

I've patched 2.6.32 and 2.6.34.1 and they've been running great. Maybe we can think of putting on AUR a patched kernel.. I'll see what I can do.
