i'm on a two day old installation and using kdemod. when i put in a data cd, the device notifier does nothing. when i put in my slax livecd, it pops up, recognizes slax and asks me what to do with it. if i open a terminal and try something like "mount /media/cdrom", i get a segmentation fault.
here's my /etc/fstab:
#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
UUID=830caa70-c277-4bdc-ae4c-eb7bf3e266bc swap swap defaults 0 0
UUID=910cec06-0466-4326-8a03-77bbbec57190 / jfs defaults 0 1
UUID=ac21aaad-72a7-456f-adf4-cf138287f31f /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
UUID=e966b147-a6d5-4350-a8c4-c0a21d76f049 /home jfs defaults 0 1
/dev/sdb1 /home/fuscia/ext-d vfat user,noauto,exec 0 0
when i installed, i let my /etc/fstab be automatically generated, as i've done with all my other arch installations.
this area is pretty much a mystery to me.
i did load my slax livecd to ram to see if that environment would recognize data cds and it did.

You aren't using HAL? If you do you should comment out cdrom and dvd lines from fstab.

i am using hal (and it is loading upon booting). i commented out the cdrom and dvd lines, but nothing happens. and now, when i do something like "mount cdrom", i get a response that there is no such thing in /etc/fstab.

Do you start KDEmod from kdm?
If I understand it right, HAL doesn't even give a message that it couldn't moutn because of "bla bla" something. To mount it manually would if there's no rule added to fstab mean you need to specify mount-points, so it sounds to me as correct behaviour.

no, i use startx. also, i only occasionally use kde (it gets on my nerves, so i dump it and go back to openbox).

is not "/media/cdrom" a mount point?
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
at any rate, either way, data cds are not being recognized.
my camera still mounts with "mount camera".
/dev/sdb1 /home/fuscia/camera vfat user,noauto,exec 0 0

You just wrote "mount cdrom"so I thought you hadn't specified a mount-point.
Do you start KDE with consolekit activated? I just tested here at work - yes I'm fortunate enough to be able to use Arch at work - and it has KDE (not KDEmod) started by KDM which activates a consolekit session, and no problem at all to get data-CDs mounted. At home though - Awesome with or without SLiM or CDM - I need to add "ck-launch-session" to ~/.xinitrc, and it works just as well with data-CDs.
Anyway if your camera is mounted automatically I don't know what's the issue. I sounds strange to me that HAL doesn't even react and at least spit out a error message. If HAL is started it should notice when a device is added.

i still can't get this worked out, but i found a pretty oafish way to work around it - comment out hal in my /etc/rc.conf, uncheck my cdrom entry in /etc/fstab and mount and cp while in the console. i guess it's on a par with grenade fishing, but it does work.

Since last upgrade (a week ago) I have the exact same problem, it seems to only relate to data cd's??. Nothing happens at all no msg etc.
dmesg returns lots of;

When I try to manually mount I also get the segmentation fault msg.
I have been able to make an iso of the disk with dd if= /dev/sr0 of=TFT/iso
But this is of now real help.
Hal & I are definitely not friends, he regularly plays up making my regular upgrades a lottery:-) I suspect he might be the offspring of uncle Bill.
Any help will be appreciated.
Many thanks

I wonder if this is hardware related, because I've been able to replicate it using a USB optical device. Or that it's some oddity between how discs have been burned and this device.
A disc probably burnt by Nero or Windows own burn functionality works perfectly on regular optical devices I have, but the USB one put out this info repeatedly (similar to the Karenslfs'):
Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 199
sr 5:0:0:0: [sr1] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08

Another type of bootable data disc, a Linux distro ISO burnt in K3B, is mounted by HAL perfectly.
Just some input on what I found out, but not been able to put together as a solid explanation.

I wish mine was since I have exactly the same problem. CD's won't mount either auto or manually yet DVD's will.
I have another computer wth Arch installed and the same issue exist there too.
The assumption is that the problem occurred during an upgrade but since I haven't needed to read a cd in several weeks I have no idea when this happened or what hosed it . (Won't auto mount and the "segmentation fault" error message when I attempt to mount via the terminal.)

Im getting the same error here. CDs are not recognised by the system and DVD's are.
Any help??

A couple solutions to this issue have been posted in the Workstation User forum under the title "cannot mount cdrom".
You can either downgrade a package or apply a patch to the existing offender.
Good work Matzo, thank you. Read the bug report he gives a link to.

I don't think this helps:-) but...
I've just burnt a "data cd" with the normal Xfburn & put in a blank cd all seemed well, however the dmesg return still has the same error messages similar to above....

also mount returns.......;

while it's burning dmesg returns the same error............

i.e. the cd is "still" not formally mounted; however Xfburn completed the making of the data CD with now errors returned.
I've just attempted to re-mount this new data CD which was just burnt with Xfburn & again dmesg gives lots & lots of ..........

plus one to the problem, audio disc at /dev/cdrom fails to mount
dvd disc at /dev/cdrom mounts.

I don't know if this is relevant, but I had similar issues with burning CD's on my laptop, the CD cannot be read afterwards or booted from, works perfectly if burnt in Windows.
I also witnessed similar bugs on an Ubuntu laptop of a friend.
