Linux-api-headers & python-imaging upgraded, Xorg fails.

Hey archers, as the title says, I upgraded. It just asked me to replace kernel-headers with linux-api-headers and to replace php-(something?) with php-input(I think). It may not have been php, but it was something along those lines. Before, xorg wouldn't start, I would login, be flashed with a black screen, and then kicked back to the login screen again. Then I used 'sudo pacman -S slim' Now, Slim wont boot, the log says it's missing a library, and /etc/bin/slim doesn't exist anymore. I would post the logs of Xorg and slim, but i'm using the links browser in the terminal from within my broken system. Xorg complains of something along the lines: {WW}fail Drm device three or four times and then it loads my evdev (_Logitech gaming) mouse, did something along the lines of: {WW}module failed to load before quitting. I'm guessing the problem has something to do with upgrading to the linux-api-headers, since nothing went wrong until I rebooted my computer.

Upgrading linux-api-headers shouldn't have caused that.  I'd have a look in /var/log/pacman.log to see what else you updated.  You've obviously got a problem with x loading anyway, so you may want to look for the cause of that.

Re: Linux-api-headers & python-imaging upgraded, Xorg fails.

I checked the log, and you're right, it wasn't just the api-headers. What else was installed/removed & replaced:
lxde-settings-daemon --> lxsession-lite
pil --> python-imaging (where did I get php-input from?)
upgraded slim
upgraded libjpeg

and the log for Slim(wrote it down this time):
Dropping Master
slim: unexpected signal 15
(EE) intel(0): failed to initialize kernel memory manager
setting master
record: extension enabled at configuration time
record: this extension is known to be broken, disabling extension now.
record: bigs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20500
[config:Dbus] couldn't register object path
dropping master

Any ideas?

Re: Linux-api-headers & python-imaging upgraded, Xorg fails.

I have a similar problem since that upgrade.

Problem:  X won't run correctly.  Neither my mouse nor keyboard work.  Both are part of the laptop, not externals.

Context:  Just decided to reformat my computer after it all of a sudden became quite slow.  Stupidly just thought a reformat would fix it so didn't bother looking into what caused the issue, but I do know it was after a -syu.

What Ive Tried:  Xorg -configure.  Hwd -xa.  I've even manually entered in the example x.orgconf provided in the T400 wiki here.  None of them seem to work.  I've tried using both Hal and without.

Are others experiencing issues?

Jpt, were you using LXDE before the problems? If not, I guess we can pin the problem to driver/refID(or similar) changes in the linux-api-headers package.

I'll try removing my keyboard and mouse, after xinit, to see if I can make sure its not just the mouse and keyboard malfunctioning.

This is definitely not caused by either linux-api-headers or python-imaging...

Is it related to this: http://www.archlinux.org/news/484/

Thats definitely it. I just nailed it down to my intel chipset, Xorg is failing to become the DRM master or something like that. It comes from having an old computer I guess >.>

Thanks for the help, Allan. Hopefully this issue is fixable.

So now that the latest updates have left us with crippled systems... will there be a tutorial on how to restore our computers?

If you have "i915.modeset=0" in your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst, remove it.

Re: Linux-api-headers & python-imaging upgraded, Xorg fails.

If you updated xf86-intel-driver, according to the news you have to enable KMS now. I guess I should start reading the news before I upgrade, because I had the same problem after upgrading my driver. Enabling KMS fixed it.
