Switching to lighter desktop environment(Laptop)

I am currently using Gnome and gdm. But i tought to use something lighter like openbox or LXDE, i dont know which to choose due to the integration of applications, would the sound, firefox work with other environments ?

Where i could get more information how to install, do i need to remove gnome and gde ? or i can use just session based selection? neutral
