MPD - I'm impressed!

I can't express how I am surprised and impressed by MPD and GMPC. This is the best solution for my 1.5 GiB collection of .oggs. Light, fast, simple and powerful. Takes 0.15 s to start gmpc. Instantly displays list of more than 500 files. Can log out without stopping music. No pauses between songs. Searching, organising and listening couldn't be easier (I also use EasyTAG).

I found out that there is only one word to describe xmms/beep/xine/mplayer interface: HORRIBLE! Man, xmms/beep should be deleted from sourceforge to save space!

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

I use this great program for over a year now big_smile
There are different front ends for it, I use the phpMp2 webinterface, so my music can be accessed from every machine in the network.

You will find more frontends on http://www.musicpd.org

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

I have been using mpd for about a month and I am quite pleased with it also. I use ncmpc most of the time.I like it because I log out of x alot. It manages my 4000 music files well, although I mainly just listen to music streams like "club 977".

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

gets my vote too - it's not so great for playing a single file but then it's not for that is it?

anybody got  a colour config they'd like to share?  I just use grey myself but i'd be keen to see what others have managed.

While I find mpd very fine and dandy I think rose's comments about XMMS/BMP/Mplayer and Xine to be absolutely disrespectful to the author's of said software.

Where's YOUR fucking media player you've spent -atleast- 5 man years on.

Hmm, someone has a strong opinion.  While I agree with miqorz, I do feel that developers of things like mplayer and xine and xmms get more than their due

While I agree they do get alot of credit, That's absolutely no reason to suggest they get deleted from SourceForge to "save space".  roll

it was a rhethorical element in exaggeration, a hyperbole, an overstatement ... nothing to take literally

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

Of course but to suggest such a thing even in that manner is just a slap in the face to the authors of the software.

Just because someone likes another distro more than Arch doesn't mean they have the right to suggest in any way shape or form that it should be deleted from all servers to "save space".

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

Amen to MPD.  I was always tired of my system getting clogged with MP3's.  I setup an old Duron 1300 machine that now functions as a gateway/firewall/multimedia machine.  I dumped all my audio files onto that machine and play music over the network.  I also setup NFS on that machine so that when I rip a CD on here, it's easy to just transfer it over then update the MPD database.

I exaggerated a bit... Mplayer&Xine are great when you want to watch a movie.
But I dislike xmms (and bmp). It's simplistic "winamp" playlist is just too limiting. It might be enough, but not if you have more than 50 oggs/mp3.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

mpd rules. I've gotten back into nethack and now when i kill X to play, i can still listen to music and have ncmpc in vc2.  and ncmpc has vim navigaion so its easy to find songs. Definately my favorite music player.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

Is there any way to rate mp3 in your playlist as rhythmbox allows it? that's the only feature missing, but turning on my computer and hearing the music I heard at shutdown, is just so cool big_smile.

Re: MPD - I'm impressed!

The biggest "thing" for me is being able to quickly switch to console without my music shorting out and still being able to view my playlist.

I have about 5 gigs of music (not sure how many really) but I used XMMS for a very long time very happily.

I know people with about 10,000 mp3s using XMMS happily.

that's exactly how the world goes round : one is happy untill one finds a even better way to be happy - then the old way being happy will be duped in favour of the new way of doing things ;-)

Umm... XMMS can play a directory, you know.

(Though admittedly, XMMS is not my favorite... The use of GTK1 is just stupid.)
