Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

I was just curious as to if this was in any way possible... just something to give thought too.

Start here, and then Arch-ify it. smile

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

The question is: why? Like with all those attempts to run Linux on everything, including cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, etc. Why do you need it there?

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

I don't think Arch Linux would provide any advantage over DSLinux (as linked to by tomk). The distribution used for DSLinux is catered for mobile devices. This is necessary for execution on the DS because it does not have a MMU (unless the DSi specifically has one, which I doubt). You can use DSLinux to SSH into an Arch box...

ilembitov: It is great for remote management and online chatting. irssi on a portable device is awesome, especially with the touch screen on the DS for a keyboard.

Ffs, I was going to post some stupid comment about putting Arch Linux on a toaster just before I saw that link.

I suppose it will be interesting when most devices in the house are on a network... timing meals with programmatic precision, perfect toast every time, ssh'ing in to defrost some meat, etc.

Of course the adverts on the fridge display and the DRM on the micro that will  prevent you from cooking competitors' food will be a bitch.

Pah. They'll probably just use the same libtvdinnercss that they make illegal to distribute. We'll all use it anyway.

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

The DSi has 2 ARM processors. Arch is an i686/x86_64 distro. So I don't think it'll work :-)

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

s1gma - it's called porting, and imo the solution lies somewhere between dslinux, linked above, and archmobile, All that is required is one or more people with sufficient time, skill, and most of all, enthusiasm. smile

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

Many thanks for the link to ArchMobile, I didn't know that. I knew of some Arch ports (mostly i586), but I didn't know I could run Arch on my phone !
One more item on my todo-list :-)

One thing that would be neat is to be able connect through ssh to your server and manage rtorrent.

I tried getting DSLinux to work but I think a memory expansion was needed on the non DSis (either a slot2 flash card or the opera browser), which I wouldn't consider buying just for DSLinux.

EDIT: slot 2, thanks poster below for pointing that out! smile

Fixed that for you. It has other uses besides copyright infringement.

Believe it or not, the only reason I bought one was so I could play with homebrew browsers and DSLinux.

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

Although I play some alternative games on my DS I have used it most of all as an e-book reader with the amazing little programs DSLibris and the comic book reader for the DS (Comic book DS).

I love all the stuff the DS can do once you hook it up with one of those little cards. It is sold as a silly game console but can be so much more.

Don't talk so loud. Nintendo may be listening...

Stay on topic please. Discussion of pirating techniques is not permitted in this forum.

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

Of course not, that's why we're not discussing pirating techniques.

Anyway, I'll try to stay on topic. Archlinux on the DS might be fun, but since we already have the working LinuxDS can't see the point in going through all that trouble porting Arch to achieve what exactly? Btw, what cards work on the DSi? Last time I checked the old ones weren't woking well, and the DSi lacks the GBA slot (Slot2).

I hope that discussing these flash cards (I don't know what else to call them, extension cards?) doesn't count as pirating techniques, as they are the only known way (at least to me) to make the DS run homebrew.

Re: Arch Linux on the nintendo DSi

barzam - urist already suggested an acceptable alternative, so please use it. I have edited your posts accordingly - please make sure that is not necessary again.

Gotcha. I will make sure I use this correct terminology in the future.
