University project about Arch

Hi,

I'm studying computer science at the university and I have a scientifical research and communication project to do. It must be around 20 pages and the subject was free but needed to be approved by the teacher. I asked him if I could do it about arch, starting by explaining the concept of a linux distribution, the describing some Arch tools, comparing arch and other distros, etc and he said yes.

So now I'm asking you, fellow archers, if you have any ideas of documentation (books, etc)  that I can put into my bibliography to avoid having only a webography.

Thanks for your help

Re: University project about Arch

I guess its kind of obvious, but The Arch Linux Handbook ( ie the printed version of the Beginners guide) is one source.

Re: University project about Arch

If you have topics about concept of a linux distribution and arch comparison to other distros you can put in your bibliography books for different distros. There are plenty I think smile

And it will be interesting for me to see the final result. Can i see it when it's ready?

Good luck!

Re: University project about Arch

DONT get the Arch Linux handbook. I was madly disappointed when I bought it. Its a total waste of money. Its just an exact copy of the beginner's guide. Nothing more. Its also pretty poor quality material (physically); when I flipped through it for about 2 minutes and put the book down again the cover went all bendy like one of these really cheap books with poor binding. I might as well have printed out my own copy of the beginner's guide. It was all the amazing reviews of the Arch Linux handbook that enticed me to buy it but sadly I must give it a one star. Sorry Dusty...

Hey Burt,

I second noreaga - PLEASE make your project available online, put it in the wiki, wherever, 'cos I reckon a few people would like to read it smile

No worries, I'm sure we have a couple French speakers in the Arch Linux community. Perhaps you could let the guys over at archlinux.fr know about it.

That's what we English readers have Google Translate for. cool

Dealing with talking of Linux in general, and comparing Arch to other distros, consider the Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible for a paper source of general knowledge. Also, any GNU tool books, as Arch relies heavily on GCC and its surrounding infrastructure, for ABS, and the use of AUR (even though you rarely have to know, since Arch has excellent package monkeys, and we have yaourt tongue), where other popular distros tend to have binary-based experimental repos.

French? :-) After three years of learning my only words are: "Je suis désolé, mais J'ai oublié mon devoir" and "Je ne comprend pas." :-) But I will give it a try, with Google Translate it should be piece of cake :-) I am really looking foward to see it.

Thanks for the GNU/Linux. EDIT:Thanks for the GNU/Linux, Linux guru, for the manuals and wikis.

This criticism is quite unfair, I think. I haven't seen it, so I cannot comment on physical qualities - but everyone knew from the start that it would just be a printed version of the Beginners' Guide. That was the very aim of this project, and it was done ...

If you can read German, we have a list of reviews and press notices and interviews over here (it is all online, but some of it is just the online version of printed sources):
https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Arch_in_den_Medien
There are probably similar lists in other languages out there.

And perhaps you could use a wayback machine to figure out how things looked like in 2003 or 2005 - explaining how Arch came into being, why it is this way today, may be much interesting than another comparision with other distros. But then, as a historian, I may be biased here smile

Re: University project about Arch

Be aware of the "Live" arch-based CD/DVD/flash OS packages.

Also the "packer" package and its variations.  Very active interfaces in that area.

Don't forget the well-administered forums!!

And most certainly emphasize the admins are all volunteers!!!!

Not to mention it's number 7 on the hit parade!!!

A new "Live" entry in development is ArchBang..quite a firecracker!!!!

Re: University project about Arch

I do not think that what makes a distribution is documented, I think you need to go into the deep water and start investigating the various communities that are behind a distribution. To interview key people, how the distribution is influenced by them and and to describe the atmosphere of the community, philosophy and attitudes.

Re: University project about Arch

Cerbie : Thanks for the ideas, it's gonna help me having some books in my bibliography smile

tlaloc : The wayback machine is a great idea too to have some history background

lilsirecho : Great topics !

lordmetroid : Thanks, I didn't thought about doing it that way but it could be a very nice part of the paper to have interviews like that. I'm gonne go through the osnews arch devs interview again and maybe try to have a little chat with some devs if they're ok with it.

Re: University project about Arch

I ordered the Handbook so when I receive it I'll be able to check the quality on my own. I'll give you feedback.
