Which 2.6.x kernel is best to use for a desktop?

Hey Everyone,

Does anyone know which 2.6.x kernel is best to use? Is there a difference between the ARCH, standard, mm, and ck kernels, even as I recompile them with different settings via menuconfig?

I know that 2.6.11 final is out from www.kernel.org, but for the rest...I have no idea where to find the ARCH kernel, it's not in the repositories, only mm appears to be

There is no best kernel, it depends on what you want. As for what the differences are between those different patchsets, just read all about them on their site.

Arch uses the -as, a security fixes only patchset. ck uses -as as base and has some other things (different cpu and io schedulers for instance). -mm if the main testbed for kernel changes and the least stable one. If you're lazy you should simply use Arch's default kernel and not bother about it. If you want your custom kernel then just pick one and use it.

To me, the best kernel for a desktop is the -ck patched kernel for it is specially meant to improve the responsiveness of the system for a desktop usage.

Also know that -ck is part of -nitro patchset.

Although it's designed for the desktop, is there actually any performance improvement from the standard?

Yes, you system is faster with -ck patch than without. But you will more feel that speed gain in desktop use than, for example, command line stuff.

I've used every major patchset out there (from my gentoo days), from Love-sources to Frood-source, and the kernel that I'm most comfortable with is the mainline vanilla - it simply works!

After some further investigation, he are the main points you have to examine for your desktop usage :

the -ck patch is a stable patch that improves responsiveness
the -cko patch (for ck Overloaded) is more experimental and some things may not work if you have an exotic configuration. However, this patch is even faster and has reiser4 support as well as other features...

the arch kernel is just "kernel26" its in the repos. its the vanilla kernel pretty much with everything on.
