Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

Hi all,
I`ve moved from Ubuntu to Arch and there are a lot of new thing like this CPU fan regulation. When i use sensors my two cores are above normal 50 degrees and they starts from 70 and in load mode goes to 83-4 degrees ...witch is not normal...because I was using Ubuuntu and Windows before and never get so hot ?!!!! I`ve red a few wikis but no luck - cant make it (with sensors to see the RPM of my fans speed ???) work properly.....
If it`s possible for now to set manualy to full power the fan will be good until find good fix of this problem...because this is not a normal operating temperature....
Thank you

P.S Also i`ve get my cpu working on down frequency 1.2Ghz - still no change of the temperature...i can`t even feel the cpu fan ?!?!!!!

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

By any chance, were you using 32-bit Ubuntu then moved to 64-bit Arch?

I had a similar problem with my Acer 7720, and it was solved by updating the BIOS.

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

hi i have a problem with my fan too
i'm running arch 64-bit on acer 5738 and everything seems to work fine except the fan
i installed lm_sensors by following this guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lm_sensors, and when i run
modprobe it87 i got following error:
FATAL: Error inserting it87 (/lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/kernel/drivers/hwmon/it87.ko): No such device

The output of sensors is

[root@laptop nikola]# sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +54.0°C (crit = +101.0°C)
temp2: +54.0°C (crit = +101.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +51.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +50.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

my fan is working all the time and i dont think that this are correct temperatures because laptop is cold

can somebody help me with this?

p.s sorry for my english

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

I still don`t have Windows to update the bios - which i think is a possible problem but Windows 7 works good with 64bit
Yesterday i`ve reached 92 degrees and laptop turned down ...after that i`ve boot up fail save boot because the normal one was broken...and my fan start working on full power all the time...STILL the temperature was above NORMAL ! And after i install my Ati catalist drivers it totally blow my mind ....and now I`m running my old Ubuntu 9.04 witch works great with this laptop ...my temperature is 32 to 50-60 degrees ( NOT 92) I`m not booting arch till this problem is fixed because The heat is a killer for the laptop... li-ion battery is most effected by this and it`s live runs down.

By the was 105 degrees critical is very very dangerous ! Make sure your CPU is not above 90 !!

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

I have the same laptop and the same problem. At the moment my sensors shtow

sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +57.0°C (crit = +90.0°C)
temp2: +57.0°C (crit = +90.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +53.0°C (high = +90.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +52.0°C (high = +90.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)

The fan is not at max speed but it`s working faster than necessary.I think the problem is with the sensors or something because i`m not so sure that the temperatures shown here are the right ones.

That`s strange because it comes with Linux pre-installed....only console, no GUI but still !

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

I`ve got the same problem. My laptop is 5738ZG, and i`ve been trying for some time to make it work in normal heat boundaries. The curious thing is that in other distros i don`t have that problem...i`ve tried it with Mandriva, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, openSUSE and it doesn`t get that hot neutral only with Arch sad If someone has found a solution, it would be great to share it with us smile

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

Same thing (I think) here, Acer Aspire 5738G too.

Speedfan shows 34-35 Celsius in W7, sensors shows 54-55 and 45-46  (I don't know which corresponds to the windows values), and fan always on.

Cpufreq working ok, ATI powersaving enabled as per wiki, laptop mode tools. Have not been able to get fan speed regulation working (unknown chipset).

Both temps while idle.

Any idea?

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:       +57.0°C  (crit = +90.0°C)
temp2:       +57.0°C  (crit = +90.0°C)

That's your real cpu temperature. Don't worry too much with that unless it reaches the 80ºC under load.

Remember to open and clean your laptop at least twice a year.

On windows use coretemp to see your real cpu temperature.

edit... oh wait... this is an old thread...

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

Core Temp said 44-45 again. I'm not worried, but I would like to know why this 10 degrees hop between both OS. And battery is lasting less when in Arch, I have no other linux to try installed, only W7.

What am I missing??

Re: Acer aspire 5738G HOT CPU

I get the thing!

Installing Catalyst drivers (catalyst-test) made the trick for me. Now the temps are as in W7, and so the battery time.

Maybe the powersaving feature is not fully developed in the open source drivers.....
