New Arch user coming from Ubuntu

Hey guys, I just installed Arch for the first time over the last two days and I have to say I'm really really impressed. I have been a linux user for several years. I started with knoppix back when it was the coolest livecd on the block, tried to use debian but couldn't figure it out, switched to Ubuntu (around 5.04 I think) and stuck with that as my main OS for daily use up until two days ago. For the past week Ubuntu has just been very unstable and not running as bug free as normal, so I decided I'd finally give Arch a try.

My first impression: I didn't think KDE could run this fast or be this stable (I'm using kdemod). It probably runs about 40% faster than it did in Ubuntu. It's really amazing what a difference only having things installed that you actually use makes. Admittedly, there are a couple of things that aren't working perfectly on this (the kde network manager being one of them), but I've got some workarounds going so that it doesn't matter.

It may have taken almost two whole days to set up (whereas ubuntu could have been installed and configured in half a day tops), but in the long run the stability is worth the initial set up time. I'm thinking Arch will become my primary OS for the forseeable future smile. Nothing against Ubuntu, I still think it's a great distro and I love their philosophy and what they're doing for the open source community. But Arch is just so much more streamlined, I totally love it. The difference between Ubuntu (in KDE at least) and Arch is absolutely night and day.

So a big thanks to all the devs and the community that make up this awesome distro and wrote all those helpful wiki pages. I've learned a TON about Linux over the past couple of days and I'm excited to be using Arch.

Way to waste our time with another useless topic.

Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

Given that you use KDEmod check out Chakra forums too. For everything KDEmod related.

Re: New Arch user coming from Ubuntu

One thing I found after migrating over to Arch is that I actually feel it is the most simple distribution to maintain and use. After you get used to it and as long as you are generally in line with the Arch Way/Philosophy, I think the chances are good that you will find this as well.  And don't let the join date fool you.  I've only been using Arch since early this year, a little over a month ago.  You might find some struggles here and there (particularly the install period) in your path but overall it is IMO a fairly easy distro to use and maintain, not to mention a very powerful one as well.

You struggle because your $PATH is not correct tongue

Welcome to Arch, BTW.

lol - that's pretty good!  The most important three things in choosing a dist:  environment, environment, environment.

Welcome to Arch, nloudon1.  I arrived on the boat from Kubuntu a few moons ago and haven't looked back.  When I switched to Arch I dropped KDE as my desktop and switched to Openbox - talk about a speed improvement!
