[SOLVED] gimp can't open any files - probably an easy fix

I can't open any files such as .png's or .jpg's in gimp. How can I change this. I installed it via pacman. I don't know if this helps, but I'm running kde.

is your system up to date?

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

yeah. I think I might need to add the location of libpng to maybe one of the plugins folders but I don't know

I didn't have to do anything special to gimp after the libpng change.  Are you trying to open the image through the file manager or through gimp? if you run gimp by command line and try to open something, does it give any errors?

If I run it though the command line, I get this:

It looks like it can't find some png libraries. I have libpng installed.

Ehm what version of gimp and what version of libjpeg and libpng do you have installed? Its possible your mirror doesn't have the version of gimp that was recompiled for the newer versions of said libs...

Your version of GIMP is out of date.

Re: [SOLVED] gimp can't open any files - probably an easy fix

Version number isn't what we're after here. Look at the release number.
2.6.8-2
Is the one recompiled for the new libs not
2.6.8-1

Suppose I should have specified that in my first post...oh well...:P

you can use reflector or https://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html to pick out a mirror that is more in sync

Well, I upgraded to 2.7 devel and it worked big_smile I don't understand why though because a few days ago, on my other arch pc (with gnome) it worked.

Strange! Did you upgrade outside of the Arch package system? This will most probably cause severe problems later on.

Why not doing as adviced? Look for a decent actual mirror and install extra/gimp 2.6.8-2.

To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

most likely .I had the same issue and still do ( minor hack to the gimp " Makefile" to get it to build
( gimp-2.6.8.tar.bz2 )
it is a png issue
this error is most likely showing up

error: 'png_set_gray_1_2_4_to_8' was not declared in this scope
