Welp, appears that Arch don't like the Adaptec 29160 SCSI setup I have

It always hangs and then gives up on trying to find the root volume of the CD!

Thus, impossible to install Arch. The Plextor SCSI CD drive isn't dead, and looks like the kernel makes it behave like it's bad.

The kernel seems to actually make the CD drive spin up and down and up and down!

Windows XP installs fine and I have been able to install Ubuntu with an alternate CD image.

This means that the only successful installs have been with Ubuntu alternative CD installs.

Update: The problem is possibly the SCSI CD drives.  I may be able to get by that with an IDE CD drive.
