Keyboard mapping - minor confusion

Hi All,

Enjoying my Arch setup thus far, in keeping with the 'Arch Way' I'm trying to learn more background stuff. Here's the scenario:

UK keyboard.

i) Keyboard mapping fine in console (set in rc.conf, working as it should)

ii) On setting up X and testing the server with xterm it was also okay. Gnome seemed to not 'take' the settings though. Now here is where my memory is getting hazy, as I'm not sure when I first noticed the problem. I observed the procedure for disabling input hotplugging and using xorg.conf, and I also tried commenting out these lines and letting hotplugging take care of it, but nothing seemed to work - I got a US kbd map in Gnome.

iv) setxbmap works from the shell, but including this in .xinitrc (as suggested in the beginner guide) before the DM starts didn't seem to make a difference on reboot - defaults back to US.

iii) Using Gnome's GUI tools for setting the keyboard does work.

Everything is working, there's no problem. Arch has made me inherently curious though - does gnome override everything?

Cheers

J

Re: Keyboard mapping - minor confusion

I've a feeling hal may be resetting your keymap.  Does specifying the correct layout in hal help?
