kernel 2.6.10 conflicts with hardware volume control SOLVED

I've just installed a custom 2.6.10 kernel on my Dell laptop, compiled using ABS with the config from my current 2.6.9 kernel, which works perfectly. 2.6.10 boots up fine mostly - one error message about usbdevfs, which is easily corrected - and my hardware seems to be working as with 2.6.9, except for the hardware volume control - Fn + PgUp/PgDown, also dedicated buttons on the left hand side of the machine. These work fine under 2.6.9, and volume adjustments made with them can be seen in realtime in alsamixer. With 2.6.10, however, as soon as I touch them, the laptop freezes up completely, and can only be rescued with a hard reset.

Software volume control using alsamixer or the xfce volume control works fine. I'll be digging around for ideas about this, but if anyone has any suggestions, they would be appreciated.

TIA.

Re: kernel 2.6.10 conflicts with hardware volume control SOLVED

I had a problem similar to this with 2.6.10. The sound for apps/movies, etc werent working, so I went in the Control Panel in KDE and unchecked "Enable the sound system"
Worked fine after that

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't use KDE, but it might help with my research.

Re: kernel 2.6.10 conflicts with hardware volume control SOLVED

Wait till 2.6.11 (or try rc5) and see if that fixes it. If not, try finding out what causes the problems. (double check that if you change back to a 2.6.9 kernel it works fine etc.) If it's caused by some kernel change then try to find out what change causes it and/or contact the Linux kernel mailinglist or a fitting person from the maintainers list.

It would also help to tell what model and type laptop you're using exactly.

Re: kernel 2.6.10 conflicts with hardware volume control SOLVED

Thanks i3839 - I thought this thread was dead and buried.

I'll definitely give 2.6.11 a shot when it arrives, but I hadn't thought of trying an rc - good idea.

I'm not sure where to go with finding the cause - there's nothing in the logs, and xev doesn't register the relevant keys/buttons. I've already double checked the 2.6.9 downgrade, and it definitely does work with that kernel.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5000 with 650MHz PIII Coppermine and 384MB RAM.

<edit>
Just dropped in to kernel.org, and 2.6.11 was released today.

Problem sorted - thanks i3839.

I'm now running on 2.6.11, and my volume control is back in action!

A new kernel on the day it's released - that's a first for me....
