How do I sync my laptop and desktop together, on a file by file level?
Something real easy to use, like config files and stuff, but not everything.
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

How about googling for 'linux sync software'?

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/unison/ works well for me. Use ssh or set up desktop as a server, works a treat.

Dropbox is easy and works well, might have to get creative to do .config files though.

ssh + rsync or git?
There's also sftp/scp.
