latest xorg update broke my kdm / video driver(s)

I ran a system update a day or two ago and after reboot, kdm fails and in xorg logs, I find:

(EE) [drm] failed to open device
(EE) no devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

It's not a headless system, so this shouldn't be.

I'm using nouveau and also have vesa installed. If I switch driver over to vesa, in xorg.conf, I get frozen static video and no cli in ctrl-alt-F# screens. (this was only saved by a needed fsck fix, by chance, and me remounting "/" as rw to fix the xorg.conf settings. I did this twice lol)

I'm still pretty n00b in arch, and linux in general, so I'm not sure what to do next. Anyone else see this?
