Questions on Calendars, Moon Phase Widgets, and Multimedia Development

Hello,

In preparing to move [permanently, exclusively(?)] to Arch Linux 64 I've been looking for the alternatives to what I am currently using in Windows 7. /am currently alpha-testing Arch Linux 64 on a partition on the side. There's this fun thing, a Moon Status gadget called: ("Moon Phase II"). Desktop screenshot:

tM2tpdQ

(1) Is there anything like this for Arch / in general? The graphic isn't needed (although it's pretty), only the information on the sunrise/sunsets & moonrises/moonsets, cycles, current illumination, and future New / Full Moons. Unfortunately given no 13-Moon "Natural Time" Calendar this is the closest thing I can get instead... (The Gregorian Calendar, which is chaotic, disorganized, and unaligned with any natural universal cycle to speak of, is kinda like the Windows of Calendars thanks to the Vatican, which successfully barred the 13-Moon's adoption in the 1930s, ensuring their calendar's mainstream dominance: "It may sound radical but, in fact, such a reform was proposed by the League of Nations (forerunner of the United Nations) early in the 20th century, which considered three of 500 suggested entries. The 13 Moon - 28 Day Calendar was by far the most popular — 98% of 1,300 businesses polled supported it. 'The League proclaimed in 1930 that on Jan. 1, 1933 the world would have a new calendar,' says Arguelles. 'But the Vatican opposed it and mustered the support needed to defeat it.'" Sigh...)

I am about to enter (again) into the [quite] fun world of media development. (2) Is there much support for video editing / encoding & audio editing / encoding for the formats DVD / HD-DVD / Blu-Ray (not playback of copyrighted-encrypted-scrambled content which I know is severely restricted and next to impossible)? Are most of these codecs supported? H.264 encoding, Dolby Digital / DTS, A/52 / AC3, AAC, etc.... Aiming for utilities to do things like slow down playback of the video ala high fps slow motion, for example. Playback of copyrighted-encrypted-scrambled DVD / HD-DVD / Blu-Ray doesn't concern me, only the free creation thereof with original content does — (3) is possible to Create disks of the aforementioned? Hopefully I can get this (PowerDirector 8) to work on Arch. smile

// Edited thread title again, for accuracy...

If you are about to do major video editing then i would forget Linux for now and stick with windows unless you want to dual boot, i do alot of video and photo editing but i have a Mac for that.

If you can program, then yes to both of those, else, no.

Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

I agree with smakked here. I keep XP as dual boot just for audio/video editing and gaming.

Re: Questions on Calendars, Moon Phase Widgets, and Multimedia Development

Pretty much every codec listed on that page is covered by FFmpeg, which in turn means that they're well supported in Linux. I can't speak to whether creating encrytped material is supported, but an educated guess would say yes. There's plenty of people using *nix to author and deliver content, like Google for example.

The scope of your video editing needs will determine whether using Linux 100% of the time will work for you for audio/video. NLEs are one of the areas that FOSS software is in dire need. There are a few that work to varying degrees, but most are buggy or feature light. Basic stuff like slowing down and speeding up video is covered, but more intricate operations may be challenging. One thing of note: Blender's sequence editor is one of the most underrated/overlooked NLEs out there. It's worth checking out. And hey, you get one of the best 3D modelers out there as a bonus.

--EDIT--

Just for fun:

Re: Questions on Calendars, Moon Phase Widgets, and Multimedia Development

Thank you for the responses...especially on the multimedia. I'll look into ffmpeg (should have known about it...). NLE...? Non-linear editing system. Oh. Blender? I have that and am fascinated by it; used to do 3D level/object modeling for Descent 3 and even HaloCE. smile Will look into that feature. I'd still love to fully switch to Arch if possible since there are so many reasons to leave Windows; maybe all that I frequently use in Windows can run under Wine with much troubleshooting, save the non-VMable Moon Phase II widget...

Re: Questions on Calendars, Moon Phase Widgets, and Multimedia Development

There is a Firefox add-on called Sun Cult that covers moon & sun rise/set and moon phases. It might do the trick if that's your browser. There may be others like it, or you could scrape a website with the information, maybe?

Some of the cli calendars do moon phases (eg see Remind) in their formatted calendar outputs (which could be linked to some sort of display), but AFAIA none of them do rise and set times. Would be interested if one did.

Re: Questions on Calendars, Moon Phase Widgets, and Multimedia Development

Hi

I don't know at professional level, but I used kdenlive to make home videos and it allows non linear editing and a lot of output formats, also cinelerra is a professional tool although it needs a powerful system

Re: Questions on Calendars, Moon Phase Widgets, and Multimedia Development

Unfortunately, I have not yet tested it, but Openshot is a new video editor at version 1.0 and is supposedly very stable and functional.
I have tried kdenlive and Cinelerra and one or two others, but they were horribly buggy and shamefully weak when I tried them. Development in FOSS is sometimes quick, sometimes slow, so it may be worth taking a look at them again; hard to tell.

Funny thing is, GNU/Linux is not a good platform for audio/video editing nor gaming-- 3 of the things that I love using a computer for. I always have a Mac (iLife suite) and Windows on hand for that stuff.
