I plugged in a camcorder via USB (haven't got firewire). kernel.log says:
Feb 20 14:37:01 deskarch kernel: usb 2-4.2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 50
Feb 20 14:37:01 deskarch kernel: scsi14 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Feb 20 14:37:01 deskarch kernel: usb-storage: device found at 50
Feb 20 14:37:01 deskarch kernel: usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Feb 20 14:37:06 deskarch kernel: scsi 14:0:0:0: Direct-Access Matshita DVC 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
Feb 20 14:37:06 deskarch kernel: sd 14:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg4 type 0
Feb 20 14:37:06 deskarch kernel: usb-storage: device scan complete
Feb 20 14:37:06 deskarch kernel: sd 14:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
So theoretically it should just mount automagically, no? Whatever, I have no idea how to access this damned creature with top notch video on it...
If there is some module I have to load first how do I find out which one?
Please help as this is currently beyond me...

Did a new device node show up at /dev/sdc? If so, what happens if you just create a mount point and mount it by hand?
Perhaps it contains a file system for which you have not yet built support?
Perhaps it has no file system and requires some software to extract data from a block device (I hope not for your sake)

Yes, I get this from dmesg:
usb-storage: device found at 37
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi 14:0:0:0: Direct-Access Matshita DVC 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
sd 14:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg4 type 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
sd 14:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
Now how the dickens can I talk to it?
But ewaller, your suggestion re no filesystem is a valid one, as the data is on tape and the camera came with a CD for windows only
Wine does appear to play it and I have no experience whatsoever with it. Indeed, windows is an enigma to me as I last used it last century...
It appears that kdenlive, kino, etc. are able to talk to camcorders, but only via firewire, not usb. I will see if I can get a firewire cable for this camcorder and a pci card for my box
