help with screen dimming

My screen keeps automatically dimming when I go from a workspace with a light background to one with a dark background. It gets really really bright when the background is a light color and becomes too dark to see anything when I want to work in the terminal (dark background with grayish text). I have an Nvidia 8800gt and a Viewsonic VX1932WM monitor. I just want my screen brightness to remain at a constant level.

lspci | grep VGA gives:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92 [GeForce 8800 GT] (rev a2)

Thanks for the help.

Re: help with screen dimming

Have you read your monitor's manual / feature sheet?

Could be your answer:

Re: help with screen dimming

I don't think this is the issue we're dealing with as my windows partition doesn't change dynamically at all. Just a single, base, level of contrast and brightness. The second I boot into linux I have normal contrast/brightness for about 2 seconds and then it all begins to fade (as my background color is very dark). However, I can then open a web browser and when colors abound the monitor's contrast/brightness levels peak. I've had arch installed before and have never had this issue in the past with the same hardware setup, so I'm really at a loss.
