found this little toy today and installed it. Its quite basic atm, but who knows whats coming in the near future.
You can also find this in aur. it has no kde dependencies and builds in a minute.
Homepage of the project is here: http://code.google.com/p/clementine-player/

Wow, that looks pretty. Basically a stripped down version of Amarok. I might have to check that out.
Edit: How fast does it run? Especially with a big library.

I only added half my library, but it was pretty snappy with it (~18.000 songs)

@Hide,
It works just fine for me from the AUR. Have you tried to install it from there?
I just installed it, and am loading my library. It loaded very quickly though, so far so good

I just installed Clementine now and I have to say it is fast and dead simple to use. It lacks some features that I am sure many would like, such as filter collection by album and cover art among many others. However it does fill its core purpose of playing music and it does it well. I also have to admit that I really like its plain interface plus equalizer.
I should mention that I tried it on my laptop which only has around 20Gig of music on it and it managed the collection without a hick-up. Although I know that does not really count as a large collection.
Note: spelling in topic should be Clementine for those who are searching AUR.
The software required Windows XP or better, so I installed archlinux.

Fantastic thing, I almost forgot how great old amarok was

This looks like a good project. I hope it grows, and adds features (miniplayer, playlist shuffles, etc), but it looks like a good alternative to amarok2.

lolwut?
"'Bringing joy to small mexican gerbils, a few weeks at a time.'" in the terminal when running...

I think that this could be a good message towards Amarok-2 developers.

Ahh, it's nice to finally have a Qt music player that I actually like again .

I use it and I like it very much...just 2-3 things missing but they will come along...amarok2 is so bloated..opss nou I said that!!

Yeah, this is nice. Always wondered what 1.4 was like. This is pretty cool (from what i could test of it so far).
Not sure why but compiling just appeared to halt after a few hours. Could be my old computer, could be RAM but got 446 and another G in swap so... hmm. Went ahead and created a -bin package for any interested.

what are the plans for getting the mini-player to work like in amarok 1.4? that was my favorite aspect of the old amarok, and i miss it in amarok 2.x

WOW!This looks really neat. Will be using it when I'm on KDE.
EDIT: You should have posted it in community contribution so that others can also discover this! Maybe ask a mod to move it?:)

Looked good until this:
[1] 24063 segmentation fault clementine
Oh well, I'm running from svn and it's new software, so it's fine. And also, WINDOWS SUPPORT! I've never found a music player on Windows that I truly like. This might become my music player of choice on Windows (though I rarely listen to music on Windows anymore, actually I rarely even boot Windows anymore.

There's already a lot of softwares which do it just fine (let's say mpd for instance)
Amarok is designed to be a bloatware, because its developers want to put every feature they can into it.
Personaly that suits me, I love being able to browse wikipedia inside the player while using complicated filters to generate pseudo-random playlist, etc.
I would be very frustrated with a player which could only play music
Using amarok if you want a simple and light software is indeed a very bad idea, because it's absolutely not its purpose

dunno how serious you are being..
I do miss amarok1's balance between bloat and *just play my damn music already* though. amarok2 is trying too hard to be a pain in the a$$

I'm dead serious
I've used Amarok1 for about 2 years I think, and I recently switched to Amarok2 after a few weeks with MPD.
Frankly I don't really know why everybody hate Amarok2 so much.. As far as I'm concerned it provides every feature I like, it's easy to use, it integrates perfectly with KDE and it's not that slow with a MYSQL database (the other, default one is slow as hell)
You've got to have a pretty good hard drive though, I tried it on a laptop with a 5400rpm, it felt like a huge pile of sh*t
It's definitely not designed with the KISS philosophy in mind. It's a sort of all-in-one music software, which suits my needs but I understand that a lot of people would like something lighter which just plays music and do it well. Just don't use amarok then

Yeah, I agree with atropos. Even Amarok 1.x was never designed to be ultra-simplified, there was always Juk for that (within a KDE context). I have vivid memories of people complaining about Amarok 1's "bloat" back in the day. Amarok 2 seems like a sensible progression from Amarok 1, and after a few problems with the earlier versions it's now quite full-featured and stable. It's also plenty customisable in keeping with the KDE spirit, which I like.
P.S. 2.3.0 came out today, woot

Even Foobar2000?

Found that weird too. Foobar is the only player in Windows that I can actually stand. :V I love how it can play everything under the moon (especially those obscure game console rips). For all else there is MPD :3

And beceause its pure Qt it even integrates well in GNOME
