After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Hi All,

Just upgraded my Arch install to KDE 4.4 and now I am unable to log in. I get to the KDM screen, enter my password and it seems to load, the kde spalsh screen comes up, the first icon is still blurry and it then jumps back to KDM.

Any ideas?

Cheers

had a similar thing when my root or home partition filled up completely, switch to text console and check 'df'.

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Are you able to start KDE without going through KDM? Are you able to start is as a new user?

Also, check /var/log/kdm.log if you have one.

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Log in through one of the vt's and run startx. Then run startkde in one of the terminals. Check the output for errors.

One thing you should check is to make sure to have a phonon backend installed, like phonon-xine (or qtmod-phonon-xine if using kdemod). The version will say 4.3 as of this moment, but it'll still work with KDE 4.4.

Hey all,

I have the same problem, although the problem also exists when using slim as the login manager. So far I've cleaned tmp folders and tried changing graphics driver from "ati" to "vesa".

@thread: have you also tried any of the suggestions in the last 4 posts?

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

34% disk usage on /

couldn't find anything interesting in kdm.log

Had a quick look at the X log earlier, but now I'll try the 'startx' method and see what happens.

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

ugh, there is an X server segfault. I will look into it a bit further.

Edit:
nvm, the segfault went away when I changed "vesa" back to "ati", I must have been calling an incompatible module in xorg.

Edit2:
ok, the last line is "error setting MTRR (base = 0xf0000000, size = 0x08000000, type = 1) Inappropriate ioctl for device (25)"
(everything else seems fine)

(Author's comment)
Seems I don't fully understand X - I thought X had to run before the login screen, but it appears the login screen can be displayed even when startx doesn't run?

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

I think that all you need to do is to remove your $HOME/.kde4 directory. I had the same problem and usually it is because of configuration files placed there. Those files are used by kde to autostart applications and save desktop environment preferences, like widgets placed over the desktop, etc.

I recommend you to backup this directory by doing:

move ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.backup

And try to login again with your username. This will create again this file. Then you can start porting some of the important applications where you have configurations because it cleans everything (In my case apps like Amarok, ChoqoK, Kmess, etc) Any personalization done to my kde, but again you can try to import app per app because maybe one can break things.

Hope this help you.

Editing:

This link http://www.archlinux.org/news/483/ is very helpful. I had some problems with kde not saving some applications default values and this link helped me. I forget to remove data in tmp folders and everything is going well now.

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Hi again, I'm starting to suspect the same, having read more in the xsession errors file. There seems to be stuff about nepomuk shutting down, and also references to 'invalid window's.

I guess remove the whole folder, test, then gradually move them back. I might try my other sessions first though. (eg XFCE)

Edit:
looks like i can't use slim to access xfce either. Although I haven't tested it previously.

Edit2:
Created a brand new user and it can't login either (kde through kdm).

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Thanks to one and all for your input, it was very much appreciated big_smile

But I solved this issue by basically doing the following: -

logged into a console as root and issuing the following commnds: -

pacman -Rd kdemod-complete
pacman -Syuw
pacman -Sw kdemod-complete
pacman -Su
nano /etc/pacman.conf
(find the line about kdemod-playground and # both lines, then save)
pacman -S kdemod-complete
(then un # kdemod-playground in my pacman.conf & save)

Not sure if it will help you thread, but it sure solved my issue.

Cheers

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Alright, EmyrB I'll see how I go with that, although I'm not using kdemod.

Tried more X stuff, reconfiguring xorg.conf with both (one at a time) hwd and Xorg -configure both had no effect. It's not just kde, even "startx" seems to be broken.

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Hmmm, tried "pacman -Syu" almost once a day for the past few days hoping SOMETHING would happen. The most recent update seems to have fixed it. (But only with my old xorg.cong, the new hwd one seemed to only provide the green channel of "RGB", weird.)

So.. solved! (Or at least currently working)

Ive had this problem occasionally and that always seems to work, either that or use the autologin option.

Re: After upgrade to KDE 4.4, unable to log in

Well, for me at least, new user didn't work, and startx didn't work either. (But does now as in above post)

Also, more good news. With the same "pacman -Syu" my soundcard is now recognised once more through phonon! huzzah, amarok here I come.
