startx breaks

I've installed Arch before, and this has happened before (I forgot how I got around it though), but this has come up again, on a different computer.

Roughly, the specs are Intel P4, 1GB ram, 40GB hdd, onboard Intel graphics.

I installed xorg, xmonad-darcs, xmonad-contrib-darcs, xf86-video-intel, and copied the configs (xmonad, xmobar) from my laptop over to this computer. When I startx, I see a cursor on a black screen for a moment which then disappears and is replaced by this:
L7h11l.jpg

When I go to another tty, the font appears fine. Also, capitals are unaffected by this (as you can see on the bottom of the screen, I typed out the qwerty layout without and with caps).

Any clues as to what the hell is going on?

Re: startx breaks

Your X log would be more useful for debugging purposes.

Re: startx breaks

Oh yes, silly me.

Note: I used X --configure for my xorg.conf.

Re: startx breaks

You can try without xorg.conf (always with HAL running) or a minimal xorg.conf just to set the video driver. This one works for me with nvidia, but it could be quite more minimal:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "X.org Configured"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
    ModelName "Monitor Model"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
    BoardName "G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300]"
    BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Hope that helps.

Re: startx breaks

And with no xorg at all? If that doesn't come up then let us know your vid card.
