mkvmerge produces a smaller file...

Hi everybody,
I used mkvmerge to add subtitles (vobsub) to a mkv video. The original file is

$ du -h Mon\ Oncle.mkv 
1003M    Mon Oncle.mkv

the one with subtitles added is

$ du -h Poncle.mkv 
999M    Poncle.mkv

subtitles file is 3 Mb large. The merged file (Poncle.mkv) works without any problems. Any ideas on why the file shrinked?

Maybe because mkvmerge compress the file (the obvious thing), only i'm guessing. I don't find a answer in google.
