Faunos revived

HI everyone,

Sorry, but this is my first post.  I thought it would be more appropriate to post this here than on linuxquestions.org.

Anyway, getting to the point, I've decided to bring faunos back to life.  Here are my reasons for doing so:

1.  It was loved by the community, including me.
2.  I never heard anyone say anything bad about it (excluding constructive critisism) wink
3.  I have been wanting to develop my own distro/remaster for ages.

I plan on recreating it from scratch, using the remaining branding from www.faunos.com.  It should be ready within a week.  Any suggestions?  Any reason why I shouldn't do this?  Please give me your thoughts and suggestions.

Also, I've been trying to contact raymano but I can't find his email address.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Neofish

Re: Faunos revived

Might not chakra be considered a replacement for faunos - a kde based live distro? And of course I have nothing against everybody making their own, but I do hope enough enthusiasts get together and pool their resources so that at least one of the various live Arch based projects gets to a polished, stable and useful state, and then continues to exist for more than a few months (weeks/days/...) before it retires again to the great bit bucket in the sky.

Re: Faunos revived

Whatever happened to FaunOS? I found it on the AWK, site still works, everything looks nice but no updates since 2008.

Re: Faunos revived

I remember that sHyLoCk.  We seem to keep on bumping into each other.  I've hit a road block with the larchify script, trying to get around it.  stythys, what channel would you like to talk on?  My channel is #blackstring@naos.foonetic.net.

I am quite keen to have something like this polished, but every project like this seems to die.  Take firefly as another example.

Also, i'll need to contact the owner of the website.

Welcome to the forums neofish. Good luck with this. A lot of people really loved FaunOS.

Re: Faunos revived

U got that right!!!!

Try contacting raymano with his e-mail address in arch files.

The original FaunOS was infiltrated with porn takeover: I surmise it was because of the name Faunos..a porn-based character.

I believe he would be helpful in getting it rebuilt and I hope you can make contact.  You might try a search "raymano" on google!!

Best of luck....Gladdaseeya!!!

As you mention a larchify script I guess you are trying to use larch-5, as the original faunos did. I would advise against this. Apart from the fact that I am not really maintaining larch-5 any more, there is a bug in the session-saving code which can under certain circumstances cause data loss. So especially if you are interested in the session-saving please use larch-7 instead.

I'm with you all the way as far as hosting goes, although I'm not too fond of hosting an entire OS on my connection, as that may tie up the valuable bandwidth for our web hosting company. Perhaps if it is tiny? (<200mb) For those who don't know me, I am co-founder of Australian capital web hosting alongside neofish and host a script-kiddie guides site at http://billius.neofish.org

Try a search for Raymano Garibaldi for some clue to his whereabouts.......................

Re: Faunos revived

I've merged the faunos project with uzume linux. http://uzumelinux.net/.  So, it's not called faunos anymore, it's uzume.  Me and stythys are working on it.  I'll see if I can update the distrowatch page.  Neofish

Re: Faunos revived

I'm definitely interested. But as you know we got our own ArchBang and just 2 contributors! So I doubt I'll be able to be of much help.

I second that. What we at Chakra need is just some more manpower to create one the most awesome KDE based distros you have seen yet. The ideas are there, written down and ready to be done, so there are numerous opportunities to do something, let it be packaging, coding, graphics/design, documentation et cetera and so forth...

All in all its just about if you like the idea of a pure Arch+KDE based distro, that is whats driving us all. But no manpower means no cookie, and currently we have more than enough to do with our packages and tools, which basically means no real or very slow progress on all of our other ideas. With just some more people joining the project we could do things you are not even dreaming of by now smile And dont fear any "structures" in our team (of course everyone has his/her tasks, but its all kept very flexible), we basically have no real hierarchy or something, its really just the idea that counts and whether you like it or not - and of course a lot of teamwork.

If someone is interested, just join our IRC channel (#chakra-devel @ freenode), talk to whoever is there at that time and let the awesomeness start...
