Mixing / DJing software?

So, I want to try my hand at mixing / basic DJing. My friend has some old equipment I can use, but I just need some software.

I know there are a bunch of alternatives out there, but I would love to hear some opinions about them before I start messing with them all.
Also something to make beats would be nice.

sweet, hydrogen works well for beats.

You should also check out Mixxx ( http://www.mixxx.org/ ) for live mixing, terminatorX ( http://terminatorx.org/ ) for scratching and -one of my favorites- Seq24 for a loop sequencer ( http://www.filter24.org/seq24/ ).

sweet, thanks. Mixxx seems to have some glitches though.
