No sound in Firefox extensions after update to 3.6

I have some extensions[1] that are supposed to play a sound (wav) when something happens, for example when I get a new mail. This worked well before. However, since the update to Firefox 3.6, they're completely mute.

I updated a lot of packages today, so I'm not sure it's because of the Firefox update.

Sound in Flash etc. still work, it only seems to affect extensions. Using Gmail Notifier[2] I was able to get:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsISound.play]"  nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)"  location: "JS frame :: chrome://gm-notifier/content/gm-preferences.xul :: previewSound :: line 210"  data: no]

Anyone who knows anything about this problem?

Tried both firefox-3.6-2 (extra) and firefox-kde-opensuse (AUR), i686.
Doesn't work after reboot.
Doesn't work with a new user.
No hints when running Firefox from a terminal.

Re: No sound in Firefox extensions after update to 3.6

maybe you should report on mozilla extension page. it might be incompatible with 3.6

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

They claim to be compatible, and I find it odd that all three don't work. hmm

Mogger,

sorry to revive this thread, but did you make any progress on this problem ?

I have the same symptoms, my extensions that had sound don't have it any more (Download Status Bar, FEBE).

Unfortunately I haven't had much time to dig deeper into this issue. If you find a solution, I would appreciate if you could write it here (I'll do the same, of course).

Re: No sound in Firefox extensions after update to 3.6

Mogger,

Some FF version, same extensions, win7 doesn't have the sound problem.

I only found one complain about this missing sounds after extensive goggling and checking the comments
on the FF extensions pages.

Since they can't be all deaf, I am inclined to same particular problem to our installations, perhaps some
extensions incompatibility.

Since this is not that important, I will forget about it for the time being and just go to the beach.

Mogger,

Atlantic storm, so no beach.
Instead, did some more testing.

Nope. Opened a brand new user with only one extension that produces sound, to no avail.

Oh boy.

Re: No sound in Firefox extensions after update to 3.6

Seems like I've found the problem - for some strange reason esd must be running in order for Firefox to play sounds. I tracked it down by searching on Google and noticed that some Thundebird users had the same issue, and found the solution here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … dy-821725/

Now the question is, how to I change this? I tried to run

aoss firefox

but it didn't seem to work (no application, no error messages).

Re: No sound in Firefox extensions after update to 3.6

Mogger,

Ja! underbar!

I don't know what "aoss" is, I suppose it has something to do with OSS.

I am using ALSA. Just startted

/usr/bin/esd &

in the command line and the FF sounds reappeared! Well, well...

Until now I didn't see any bad effects on my other (alsa) sounds, but we will see.

I put the ESD line in /etc/rc.local, will see when I reboot tomorrow if it still works.

Thanks, Mogger.
