Couldn't "ifconfig wlan0 up", which worked on installer

I installed archlinux today on a smaller computer. On the Installer disc (2.6.30), ifconfig wlan0 up works well (still, with my TPLink (RaLink) usb wireless adapter, but my installed archlinux (2.6.32) says for "ifconfig wlan0 up": SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
dmesg output sounds like this everytime me or Networkmanager tries to load the wlan0 interface:
"rt73usb 1-3:1.0 firmware: requesting rt73.bin
phy1 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: error: failed to request firmware."
Does someone have any ideas? Is it a good idea to compile a custom kernel? (Everything is intel in that computer, so no additional modules are required) I would be pleased, if other soultions worked

core/rt2870usb-fw 8-1
Firmware for RaLink RT2870USB (RT2870/RT2770) WiFi adapter
core/rt2x00-rt61-fw 1.2-4
Firmware for the rt2x00 wireless drivers
core/rt2x00-rt71w-fw 1.8-4
Firmware for the rt2x00 wireless drivers

You likely want one of those.
