X black screen, xrandr can't open display

Yesterday I used the vga out of my laptop with another monitor with xrandr commands, it worked fine.

Today I can't get kdm running, it doesn't report any error when I try to start kdm manually, but doesn't show anything.

When I run xrandr (& sudo xrandr ) it tells: Can't open display

Trying to exec xterm runs fine, well...before it seems to get freezed...

Any idea? Thanks!!

Try moving your xorg.conf file and look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log .  If you can start an xterm then the problem isn't with xrandr.  Have you ever started Xorg without kdm before?  I suspect that the hal and dbus system haven't been started and you have no keyboard or mouse.
