Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

Last friday, my old Nvidia card died (overheated, I think). I got a replacement today: an ATI HD3450 card by Asus (R600 series). This is an old PC with an AGP slot, so my options were unfortunately limited. I was looking for a Nvidia replacement originally, to avoid having to reconfigure stuff, but that turned out to be too hard. So I got an ATI card instead. I regret this decision now... it works fine in console mode, but I can't get it to work in X.

I've tried radeon and radeonhd drivers. I'm reluctant to try catalyst, seeing as they do not support the current kernel version (2.6.32) and I don't want to downgrade.

radeonhd (xf86-video-radeonhd) is just a disaster. When I try to start X, all I see is a screen which is mostly black, except for a garbled band of about 1/4th the screen height, mostly white with some random colours thrown in.

radeon (xf86-video-ati) doesn't work either. When X starts, all I see is the mouse cursor. And nothing else. Just a black screen with a mouse cursor. The funny thing is, it's all there, I just can't see it. When I tried "startxfce4", the cursor would change shapes when it was over window edges or text boxes. But they were invisible. Too bad.

When I run "startx" as root, I see a couple of twm windows (the default configuration, I normally don't use X as root), and I can interact with them, but it's as if the screen isn't refreshed properly. When I move a window, it isn't redrawn, but it was definitely moved, because when I enter text in it, the text appears at the new position. The 'vesa' driver works, but I can't use that for obvious reasons.

I have read the wiki article about ATI drivers and tried some of the things mentioned there (no xorg.conf, simple xorg.conf with some combinations of the sections mentioned, ...). I'm pretty sure the problem isn't KMS-related, because it's disabled by default with the 2.6.32 kernel.

What pisses me off the most is that I get no error messages whatsoever, so I haven't a clue what could be the problem. I'm working on getting some Xorg.0.log output in this thread ASAP.

Anybody have any idea what could cause this? I would really like to get this working soon. It would kinda suck if it turns out I've replaced an unusable graphics card with another unusable graphics card.

If the radeonhd problem is easier to solve, then solutions for that are welcome as well. I just need a working driver that can handle compiz, and doesn't require me to downgrade my kernel.

EDIT: Xorg.0.log contents, enjoy!

Another update: the card seems to work just fine under windows, so it is definitely a configuration or driver issue.

Re: Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

There are no obvious errors related to the xf86-video-ati driver in that log.  In fact, the log indicates 3D acceleration is enabled.  Are you using packages from AUR or testing?  If I recall correctly, xf86-video-ati from stable doesn't have 3D acceleration support for the R600 series enabled by default.  You might try using the package from stable if you aren't already.  3D support for R600 is experimental at this point.

A couple of notes:
  * xf86-video-ati is the correct driver. Do not use xf86-video-radeonhd.
  * Even though 3D support is experimental, it *should* work.  I have the same card and I've got it working.
  * Consider enabling KMS using the method linked to on the ATI wiki page.  That's what I've done and it works great, no X configuration necessary.  Note that the linked method isn't quite up to date, you'll have to read through the thread to find the relevant changes you need to make.
  * Have patience. smile  You will get it working eventually.  I know because I have the same card. :-p  It's a one time cost; once you have it figure out you'll be set until the card dies.

Re: Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

Thanks for taking the time to reply smile
I'll give enabling KMS a try. What thread is it that you're talking about? Also should I follow the "early start" or "late start" instructions?

EDIT: I'm guessing you mean this one? http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=613720

EDIT2:

I did the following:

For enabling KMS create a file in /etc/modprobe.d/ called radeon.conf with this content:

    options radeon modeset=1

... and behold, now I can actually see stuff tongue

now I just have to get 3D acceleration to work again. I'll update soon.
for some reason my cursor seems to be stuck on "X" now... weird.

EDIT3:

I reenabled compiz-fusion, and now the screen turns white, for some reason. The expo effect works (albeit laggy), but it just shows 4 white, empty desktops. I guess this is sort of a different problem. I'm still researching it. The "options radeon modeset=1" thing helped me a lot further though, thanks!

EDIT4:

making further progress. Starting Compiz gives:

compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

And Xorg.0.log makes mention of:

(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable

I haven't googled this last bit yet, I'm getting to that now. Be back soon smile

EDIT5:

"Enabling KMS will make Xorg fall back to software rasterizing, at the cost of 3D performance. " <- is this still true at the moment? In that case, enabling KMS really isn't the solution I'm looking for. Back to square one sad

EDIT6:

Another clue from Xorg.0.log:

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] radeon kernel module version is 2.0.0 but version 1.17.0 or newer is needed.
[dri] Disabling DRI.

So this is a DRI1 <-> DRI2 thing? I'm confused sad

EDIT7:

I found this, which says:

Your xf86-video-ati doesn't have support for KMS - you have to rebuild it against libdrm_radeon. This also means that you have to rebuild mesa against same new libdrm because mesa doesn't have KMS support without libdrm_radeon either.

Is this information applicable to my situation? No instructions on how to do this are provided, so I have no idea how to try it, or if it's worth trying at all.

EDIT8:

My abs tree was out of date, so I made some wrong assumptions. I'm going to recompile a few packages from ABS and see where that gets me.

This is not true.  Software rasterization indicates that KMS was not set up correctly.  You will get 3D acceleration with KMS correctly configured.

Thanks for taking the time to reply smile

Yes, this is a problem.  You have to modify a PKGBUILD or two and build/install the packages in the correct order.  I detail the right way to do everything below.

I used the following packages:
* kernel26-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25304 (you must configure with CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m. CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y enables KMS by default.  you should be presented with a configuration menu when the package builds.  type '/' to search.)
* kernel26-firmware-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25782
* radeon_ucode: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33016
* libdrm-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=10254 (you must edit the PKGBUILD to enable radeon support, see below)
* glproto-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18964
* dri2proto-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19051
* libgl-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19044 (this is out of date and requires a patch.  see my comment on the AUR page)
* mesa-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=8266 (you can reuse src/mesa from libgl-git, it clones the same repository)
* xf86-video-ati-git: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15374 (you can reuse src/mesa from libgl-git)

libdrm-git PKGBUILD:

....
  sh autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
                --enable-nouveau-experimental-api \
        --enable-udev || return 1
#                --enable-radeon-experimental-api
....

libdrm-git PKGBUILD modified:

....
  sh autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
                --enable-radeon-experimental-api \
        --enable-udev || return 1
....

Install those packages in that order and add yourself to the video group.  Make sure that your grub configuration has an option to select the new kernel.  Also make sure all of your PKGBUILDs from AUR are up to date.  A week or two ago they were all wrong (as a noted above, one of them is still wrong and requires a patch).

I hope that helps.  Eventually Arch will support KMS for radeon by default, but the driver and the kernel need to go through another release or two.

Re: Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

I have recompiled libdrm from ABS with --enable-radeon-experimental-api added to the PKGBUILD. I am now recompiling mesa, also from ABS. I'm a bit reluctant to use the -git-versions of the packages you mentioned. Is that strictly necessary?

It's not strictly necessary no.  Definitely stick with ABS if you are more comfortable with that.  I will still help you debug errors.  I just posted the above because I know 100% that it works.

Re: Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

Right, I recompiled libdrm from abs with --enable-radeon-experimental-api and installed it, then I recompiled mesa and xf86-video-ati, and installed all the resulting packages.
... to no avail. I still find the same 'version mismatch' message in Xorg.0.log

What am I missing? I followed the instructions from the wiki article, but I suppose they are out of date as well, then? Are there any other packages I need to recompile? Maybe I didn't recompile them correctly?

I guess I could try following your guide to the letter, but then I'd be using -git packages, which I don't quite like the idea of.

Either way, at the moment it's looking a lot like that's the only remaining option. Or I could downgrade the kernel anyway and give catalyst a try... which I don't like much, either.

Thank you for your help and patience, at any rate. This is the first ATI card I've ever bought so I'm pretty new to all of this. I'm thinking it's more than likely going to be the last, as well tongue

One possible solution to this issue is documented on the Xorg wiki: http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo# … MSproblems.  Make sure the module they talk about is loaded.

Also, it's possible mesa from ABS is not built with dri support for radeon.  See the mesa-git PKGBUILD: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mesa- … t/PKGBUILD.  The relevant part is:

....
  ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr \
    --with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri \
    --with-dri-drivers=swrast,radeon,r200,r300,r600,i810,i915,i965,unichrome,mach64,mga,r128,savage,sis,tdfx \
    --disable-gallium-intel \
    --enable-glx-tls \
    --with-driver=dri \
    --enable-xcb \
    --disable-glut --disable-gallium || return 1
....

You may have to modify the mesa PKGBUILD from ABS.

Either way, at the moment it's looking a lot like that's the only remaining option. Or I could downgrade the kernel anyway and give catalyst a try... which I don't like much, either.

Don't give up yet!  The fact is that both Nvidia and ATI don't support open source drivers like they should.  True, Nvidia's proprietary Linux drivers are better than ATI's proprietary Linux drivers, but it's nice to be able to use free software.  The good news is that the R600 series from ATI is getting to the point where it is well supported in the open source community.  KMS support will be standard in the kernel soon and power management options are on the way.

Of course, if you do gaming or video editing or anything where graphics performance is absolutely critical, Nvidia with the proprietary driver is the best choice.

Re: Xorg: blank screen, mouse cursor only - ATI Radeon HD3450

Thanks. I have been trying to get this to work all day, so I need a break now tongue
Tomorrow I'm going to either try what you said, or go out and buy an Nvidia card, and sell the ATI one. The latter option is starting to look more and more attractive... it'll depend on how adventurous I'm feeling smile

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.
