Drawing text on top of other windows

Ok i want to make for my laptop the sound change information display. Something like when the voulme up is pressed then the sound output is increased by 0.5 db, this should be done with openbox + alsa commands.
But how to give information about the change on screen? Is there something to draw on top screen and then fadeout after 1 sec ?
