OK, on the ATI vs. nvidia discussion, here's my final answer: Nuts to ATI.
Using the generic (non-proprietary) drivers for the onboard ATI chip, I got maybe 10 frames per second on a good day in Second Life. A bit of an improvement over my old computer's 2-3 fps, but not much. I read about all the joys of downgrading the kernel and xorg modules to work with ATI's drivers and decided that sounds like too much work. So I blew $60 on an nvidia 9500... and now fps has maxed out at over 120, sometimes as low as 30 if I'm in a crowded room and I have every possible rendering option enabled.
Sorry ATI. You were a great brand when you were Canadian, but since AMD bought you, you missed the boat.
Now I need to find something better to do with my time than play Second Life...
