Ok so everytime hal updates it seems I have to fuck with something to make automounting work again.... Last time I had to remove those lines from the fstab and add some preference.fdi line and then it worked. The wiki says to do that still, yet none of that works and I've tried everything on the wiki page. I am using pcmanfm and never had an issue with it automounting before (well after I tweaked it of course) until the last hal update (yea I know that was a while ago but I've been riding on it not working for a while and now its just ticking me off so I decided to tackle it) Its not just USB devices that aren't automounting, its my dvd rom as well that doesn't automount anymore. The error I get is pretty typical:
Rejected send message, 1 matched rules;
type="method_call", sender=":1.36" (uid=1001 pid=18009 comm="pcmanfm)
interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume"
member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0
destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=26827 comm="/usr/sbin/hald))
I am not using a desktop environment
[siegemachine@localhost ~]$ yaourt -Qi hal
Name : hal
Version : 0.5.14-1
Any suggestions on what else I can do would be appreciated.

Have you considered using udev for automounting?

How exactly are you starting your wm? Have you remembered to spawn a consolekit session with it?

just startx initiates ~/.xinitrc which has pcmanfm& in it.

@anonymous I would like to get hal working again since its more than just the USB mounting that doesn't work.

What window manager do you have in ~/.xinitrc?
Maybe sure the line is like:
exec ck-launch-session windowmanager

xset m 1 0
xbindkeys&
#nautilus&
pcmanfm&
(sleep 2 && bmpanel transpy)&
#avant-window-navigator&
cairo-dock&
gmail-notify&
#wallpapoz&
rainlendar&
conky&
#blueman-applet&
exec fusion-icon

PCManFM is not a window manager. Are you using Compiz Fusion by itself?

exec ck-launch-session fusion-icon
