alternative to mplayer... gstreamer?[SOLVED]

Hi all,

My question is this: Assuming that you have NO WAY of installing mplayer, is there a way to still watch streaming media in and out of firefox? (a simple example is Debian with unmodified sources.list) gstreamer sounds like it might do the job but its site is a joke explaining what is it. All i read is "gstreamer IS NOT ..this and that" so by process of elimination gstreamer is the president of USA, can fly planes, etc (little joke there, sorry!)
Hope you can all help as this is a question that has been bugging me for quite some time ever since my first Debian installation!

Thanks

Re: alternative to mplayer... gstreamer?[SOLVED]

From their web site:

What is GStreamer?

GStreamer is a library that allows the construction of graphs of media-handling components, ranging from simple Ogg/Vorbis playback to complex audio (mixing) and video (non-linear editing) processing.
Applications can take advantage of advances in codec and filter technology transparently. Developers can add new codecs and filters by writing a simple plugin with a clean, generic interface.
GStreamer is released under the LGPL.

Seems as though GStreamer is not what you're looking for.

Why not use mplayer?

If there really is no way to use mplayer, you might try this:

Re: alternative to mplayer... gstreamer?[SOLVED]

well like I said its Debian. I dont like having Debian installed with unofficial apt sources, seems wrong to me. Mplayer is not in the default repositories. So I was wondering what other solution there was to showing streaming media in firefox, eg trailers for movies. I find it hard to accept that mplayer is the only one with a firefox plugin. I know XMMS has one but its funnily named xmms-mplayerplugin, or something like that which shoes that mplayer must be installed, which defeats the point!
I just need an alternative to mplayer
Question: can totem play streaming media in firefox?

Thanks

Re: alternative to mplayer... gstreamer?[SOLVED]

I do not use totem, so I don't know. But I use Xine and Kaffeine (as UI for Xine). Kaffeine has a Mozilla/etc. plugin as well. I'm not sure what the dependencies for Kaffeine are, but it starts with a K so QT/KDE might be required for it.

Where did you get the impression this forum is suitable for questions about Debian ?  smile

Re: alternative to mplayer... gstreamer?[SOLVED]

Sorry about mentioning Debian! Its just I have 3 Linux distros that I like: Gentoo, Debian and Arch, all because of their package management mostly and ability to have a small base system. Debian just got me wondering about this question as before I always installed/used mplayer, and now I wondered if there was a decent alternative to a firefox plugin.

This is Arch Forum! smile

Where did you get gxine? Did you compile from source? Just wondering since you said "but that's Arch for you".

Re: alternative to mplayer... gstreamer?[SOLVED]

gxine is in the staging repo.
Add:

[staging]
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/tur/staging

to /etc/pacman.conf
Then:
pacman -Sy gxine

Now, if not for you posing the staging repo ... where would we go to find out about other repos like that? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question .. im new to Arch.
