Hello and good afternoon,
I recently ran the command 'Pacman -Syu' and sure enough, my arch box got updated. I noticed that there were updates for the xorg-server as well.
So I went ahead and updated my box.
The version of xorg-server I was running before upgrading was -> xorg-server 1.7.5-1
And after performing the upgrade the version of my xorg was -> xorg-server 1.7.5.901-1
After upgrading to the newer more latest version, I had problems using shortcuts on my keyboard and my windows would freeze, even though the apps themselves were responsive. I knew they were responsive because I did not have to "kill -9" them to terminate the apps. I did a more graceful exit using just "kill" instead. Which leads me to believe my apps were responsive... and they did not crash or freeze.
However, when I tried to close them using my mouse, on the 'X display' they would not respond. None of the apps responded.
So I went ahead and restarted my box to see if that would fix it. But it did not. So instead, I just reverted back to the older version of xorg-server which is version 1.7.5-1 which was available in my pacman cache directory. And now, I do not have any problems again. Everything is working fine as it was before I upgraded to the newest version of xorg-server.
I would like to know, if this is an isolated case or if others are having this problem too?
Thank you.
I use fluxbox as my window manager. I have no DE. I only use chromium, irssi and gedit most of the time. Sometimes google earth too. And I run the 'pacman -Syu' command whenever I start my computer in the morning. Im not sure, this info would help but I thought to put it in there just in case. : )
Thanks.

Yep, same here. Downgraded xorg-server and the problem is solved.

Hello once again,
It is a bit comforting to know I'm not the only one having this problem. But is there a way to confirm if the reason xorg-server is behaving so erratically is because of xorg-server itself or if it is because of flux-box? I'm guessing it might be flux-box. But I can't be sure.
@anadyr
What DE or WM are you using?

It looks like we are in the same boat;) however I do run pekwm as wm of choice. I can close most of the apps with Ctrl-q action, but the whole titlebar of application is unresponsive to mouse clicking, so I have downgraded for the time being.

i also have a same problem with fluxbox. i'm using openbox no problem. so, how to downgrade xorg-server?
Offline
Confirm here with fluxbox and xorg-server-1.7.5.901. Symptoms:
1. When any window presented most of the hotkeys stop working. But maximize/minimize window hotkeys seems to work.
2. When no window on desktop all hotkeys working.
Downgrading xorg-server solved the problem

so, how to downgrade xorg-server?
# pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.7.5.1-i686/x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

Confirmed again. I'm running fluxbox-git and new xorg completely locks up the computer. Only solution was to downgrade.

Sounds like a nasty little bug. I read that openbox is fine. I have been using Gnome and it seems fine also.

If it is a problem with fluxbox then I am not surprised that it is acting up. The last time fluxbox had an update was in september 2008. And that might be one of the reasons. On the other hand openbox, had an update as recently as february 2010. Seems like its time to move away from fluxbox... unfortunately.
But before I take the plunge, can anyone else confirm if it is happening with any other window manager or DE?
So so far,
xorg-server 1.7.5.901-1 HATES fluxbox 1.1.1-1
xorg-server 1.7.5.901-1 LOVES openbox
Anyone else, care to add more love, hate relationships? : )

Thats really bad news.
Raises hand Like I mentioned in my reply above I`m using pekwm, so it is not flux only related. Here is another user, having problems with xorg-server using pekwm.
P.S. Last update on pekwm was done on 30th of January 2010.

Why would I want to leave Fluxbox. It's not it's fault. It's not the one with the buggy code. BTW, as I said I'm using the git version which FYI was updated 6 days ago. Fluxbox is known to have a very slow official release schedule so why even bring dropping it up? That's not the issue here! What is the issue is in fact that xorg-server is not working for Fluxbox. If enough of us are having issues then perhaps the devs might take notice as I personally think this is an upstream bug so the Arch devs won't do anything about it anyway. I'm going to wait until either, somebody reports this as a bug and it's possibly resolved here or another version of xorg comes out.

Same problem here.

@harryNID, why wait? Report the bug.

Well I did some looking and the only thing the devs did was to update to the new version of xorg and re-enable --enable-record. I rebuild disabling record but that wasn't it. That means it's an upstream issue. I could report it but nothing would be done as it is out of their hands.
Edit: I went ahead and filed a bug report. It can be found here:

I updated to the latest git version of fluxbox from AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31183
The problem still appears.

As silly as it may seem, I feel kinda cool to know that me bringing up this issue has led to filing a bug report.
I know I suck making a big deal out of this.. xD. But I don't use the forums on the internet that much.. let alone the arch linux forums.
I just love love linux and arch linux. Thats all.

Thank you all! Downgrading worked perfect. I thought I was the only one

I can confirm that openbox is fine, at least on my machine.

Seems like I wasn't the only one to file a bug report about this either.

It's a duplicate of mine so it was closed but apparently we aren't the only ones.

Working fine here with xfce, however one user reports (in the mailing list) that xfce crashes after a few seconds.
I'm not using a xorg.conf. The only thing I've noticed is that some have
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "False"
EndSection
in xorg.conf, I don't know if that matters or not. I'm using kernel 2.6.33 from testing and all the stuff needed to have kms (xf86-video-ati 6.12.191-1 mesa and friends, plus radeon_ucode from AUR), only that comes fro testing, the rest are vanilla packages.
